i just baught a used rebuilt t-56 for $900. it has 1000 mil on a fresh rebuild. sixspeed inc did the rebuild. i also know the tranny and kid who had it. so i know it not beat up.
the tranny needs 5th gear rebuilt. (may be just a syncro) Could I do the steps in the link all the way up to removing the 5/6 gear and put it back together?

I just tok mine apart using that link and it leaves out a couple things but you will figure it out when you get in there. Also if you have anything busted in your tranny you should take it completely apart not just the back 2 gears. You might leave some loose metal in there to thrash other parts of your tranny.

You can't get more than 0.50:1 with stock parts. And anything less and the gear would have to be smaller than the mainshaft.. :-p

That and the stress it puts on the unit would be a pretty good amount.

The Trans is coming out this week. I looked at the T56 rebuild thread. Will it be ok to take the tail-housing off to look at 5th gear with out hurting anything? I want to get an idea of what parts i need to order. And just see how hard it is before I jump into it.

When you remove the tail housing you should make sure to clean the gasket surfaces before you put is back together. A bead of silicon is NOT needed. Only a very thin layer as the tolerant between the housings is pretty tight.

You have to remove reverse and 6th to get to 5th. Overall it's not bad but make sure to check the 5/6 driven gear for ANY play on the shaft. It should be on there tight.

As far as gear ratios go, you are pretty much stuck with what you have without a major overhaul of the trans.
