t56 and hurst don't fit! NOW WITH PIX
alright, i think that someone made a mistake somewhere. i have a freshly rebuilt level 2 t56 from tick and a hurst billet plus shifter (pn 3915060) that SHOULD mate up. however, the shifter mounting bases (the hole in the top of the tranny where the shifter goes) is about a half and inch narrower than the shfter base and an eigth of and inch shorter from front to back. any ideas???

i havent got a digital camera handy but i'll work on it, i'm just worried that the t56 has the wrong tail housing. thats not really a problem as long as it still fits in and f-body but i just need to know what kind of shifter to get. could this a gto tailhousing? a c5 maybe? i dont know, but tick doesnt open until tomorrow. someone out there knows this, im sure of it

A C5 transmission has a rail sticking out the front of it where the shifter connects to. It does not have a tailhousing where the shifter bolts to it. It sounds to me like its a tailhousing from a GM or Ford after market model T56. They have a more square bolt pattern instead of a rectangle pattern.

On the main case there is a more-or-less square hole thats covered over but the opening on the tailshaft where the shifter is apparently supposed to go is very rectangular. Its just to narrow for the shifter base.
i've attached a picture of a similar t56 with the same tailhousing and a pic of the tailhousing that the shifter would fit. i'm sorry that they're small but maybe you can get an idea for comparison

Post a pic of the Shifter you have when you can..sounds like you have a Ford one..
A GTO and F-body T56 are the same as far as the dimensions..both with work in either car.
I have an idea..
This is a pic if mine..
Take it and use paint to draw how the shifter you have fits on it..

the holes do not line up. the shifter base holes are 1/4 of an inch to the outside of the tailshaft holes.
to the merv: thats the tailhousing mounting hole that my shifter would fit onto...the tailshaft i have has a mounting hole about 1/2 an inch narrower from right to left then yours. also, you see in the merv's picture the mounting hole is offset to the drivers side of the transmission? on mine the mounting hole is directly on the centerline.

I have no clue. The bolt pattern on the left is the same for the Gm aftermarket, Ford after market, 03-04 Cobra and Dodge Viper. The one on the right is for the F body and the Gto models. The Vette, CTS-V and a couple of others are remote style so they don't have a tailhousing like that.

85miketpi: i cant post pictures because the transmission is at my house and im at college in another state and i've already emailed tick twice but they havent responded. thanks anyway.
all others: i've got no problem calling but i want to have something intelligent to say. i have hard plans to install the transmission this weekend (hard as in money already spent) so tomorrow is really my deadline for getting this figured out. i came here to ask you guys for your input so that i can go to tick with something more than "it doesnt fit".
if it is that the shifter base is improperly made (fingers crossed) should i risk getting a replacement from tick that also will not fit? or should i try to get my money back and get one overnighted from somewhere else?
