Default T56 5th gear problem

I have read all over the site but I canīt find anyone with my problem.

I canīt get the 5th gear in at all.
Every other gear works perfect.
When I drive the car and tries to put in 5th gear I can feel the teeth from something but it never goes in.

The car was like this when I bought it so I donīt have a story of how this came up.

6th ok?

If 6 is ok, then you probably have a worn/broken 5th gear blocker in the synchro.

Its a bad synchro assembly or blunt engagement teeth on 5th. Either way, it would be a good time for a rebuild. Or at least freshen up 5-6-R.

I had a similar problem to this with my car. I couldn't shift from 4th to 5th but I could fake into 6th then to 5th. This was like 3 years ago when Six Speed was still in business and I'd had them rebuild about 6 months previous. I sent it back to them since it was still under warranty and Amber told me I had broken the 5/6 shift fork. You might have similar problem, just throwing it out there.

2000 SS here and my 5th gear is a hit or miss. Sometimes it will take but it grinds every time. I do all of my own mechanical work but have never had a t-56 apart. I wonder how hard it would be with good instructions and if you need any special tools? I would send mine to Tick, but 1200 dollars is stiff and that doesnt even count your 5th gear troubles. Then the cost of the damn clutch, which sets my H/C back even further. 34000 miles 5th gear should be fine, I bet metal shavings have already put a toll on the rest of the internals.

I'm far from Loredo, but if you decide to ship it to Ft Worth, I'd be glad to fix it. It will be about $75 each way for shipping via UPS. I can ship it back to you the same day that I receive it, so its just a few days for the turnaround.
Or, just make the 400-mile drive I've actually have several people drive up from your area. They all said that its really hard to find a good shop down in S. Texas. It takes about 5 hours to remove, rebuild, and install the trans. Just let me know if I can help!

Good snap-ring pliers, a press, dial indicator to set bearing clearances, are the biggest things. There are some good online manuals that'll make it pretty easy. Attention to detail is the main thing.

that sounds like a bent shift fork from a missed 3rd shift and going into 5th to me. mine does the same thing.

Where would I get an end play rod tool? I wonder if doing all the upgrades (triple cone blockers, ect.)would change some of the rebuild precedures?
