Default Kinda popping out of 3rd

My 2000 SS m6 is lightly popping out of third gear if I release the lever before I let the clutch out. It doesn't take more force than the weight of my hand to keep it in 3rd and after I release the clutch I can let go of the lever and it stays in just fine. Also, once it's in and good, I can (without touching the shifter) accelerate or maintain the same speed, push the clutch in and out several times and it does just fine. It stays in gear perfectly. Does this sound like I'm going to have to open the case?

Yea, you'll have to open it up but as long as it hasnt been grinding you might get by with some minor parts like fork pads.

Is there any possibility that this clutch may be not fully engaging all the way? Or could this be a hydraulic problem of some kind? It BARELY does it and sometimes if I release the clutch very slowly, it does just fine; even when my hand isn't on the shifter holding it. I'm going to change the clutch out anyway to an LS7, but I don't want to put it back together more than once if it's just going to do the same thing with a new clutch and hydraulics. It doesn't do it in any other gear, so that points to the internals of the trans; on the other hand, I was thinking that maybe the combination of the lever placement (stock Hurst w/ short stick) and a faulty clutch would make it do it. Any thoughts?

It is doubtful this is a clutch issue. If you have the original aluminum 3/4 shift fork....thats the prob. Do a search.
