It's either the transmission or the shifter. I'm still running a stock shifter on my T56rebuilds transmission. Not one problem with the shifter (or the trans.)

Mine did something similar though when my transmission was on the way out, but come to find out three of the four base shifter bolts were loose.

60% of the time, people blame the shifter when it's still sitting on top of a stock transmission.

^ Could be a short stick too. Only one way to tell. Pull the column up and take a look under the boot.

Yep. Gotta look. When you have the boot that screws in to the floor, post a pic and folks should be able to identify it for you.

Either have someone wobble the shifter all around in the cabin while you look underneath to see if the plate is loose from the tailhousing or pull the necessary console components to see if those bolts retaining the plate are loose.

If it's loose, pull the necessary console components & tighten those bolts. While you're there, see if the cup in the offset shift lever (under the shifter) is loose or damaged (needs re-glued with the proper 2-part epoxy or replaced.)

Ok I pulled the shifter off nothing looked out of place of coarse I'm not familiar with them at all is there suppose to be fluid under the shifter? The little plastic cup thing that the shifter ball fits into comes out dnt know if it suposse to do that

Fluid is normal; it drains back down.

The cup isn't supposed to be loose. When it's loose on a T56, lateral pressure from shifting will force it against the top edge of the hole, cutting it. I'm not saying that's your shifting problem at this time. The epoxy to fix it is pricey but necessary.

How does the shifter feel? I don't know the B&M inside and out, but does it rotate around in a circle freely, more firmly as the circle is larger? Or is there resistance?

I have a b&m shifter as well and last week I noticed the same thing. The shifter felt stiff..especially in neutral. I don't no if it was because it was hotter than hades that day or maybe the shifter could use some lubricant. I have no clue.

Maybe if some of your syncros are going, something else in the transmission is letting go? If you took off your shifter and it moves properly, then its probably time to pull the transmission and have it looked at. I lost some syncros early on when I got the car and getting them repaired made life a lot better.
