Default grinding noise when clutch is pushed down

I apologise for not searching but I am on vacation and tne only internet access I have is my phone. I wont be home until next weekend and today I started hearing grinding noises between shifts, when coming to a stop, when downshifting, and when switching from reverse back to first. The noise will only happen when the clutch is not engaged or the tranny is in neutral. As soon as it engages or I let it up in neutral the noise stops. So a few questions.

What could this be?
is it safe to drive?
Is there any thing I should do to nurse it along until I can get it looked at?

I really appreciate your help.

sounds like a pilot bearing to me....I'd check it out soon before it damages the input shaft. Replacing the input shaft will require tearing apart the trans to fix whereas a pilot bearing, if caught soon enough isnt too big of a deal. Just have to get it out of the crank.

It could be a pilot related issue, no doubt...or you could have a damaged spring cage or springs. It is hard to know until you pull the parts.

Typically a bad TOB will make noise with the pedal released and in this instance, as stated above, the noise is there with the pedal depressed but it is quite with the pedal released. Anything is possible of course!

If the TOB typicall makes noise when the pedal is released then what else could make noise when the pedal is pressed down?

Also it does seem to sound like a bad bearing, or maybe one that needs grease.

Pilot bearing. Trans movement stops, flywheel keeps moving. Only bearing seeing any action are the throwout bearing and the pilot. Either way, you're replacing them both since you're pulling the trans.

It could be the pilot as mentioned above and this will make noise with the pedal depressed. But keep an eye out for anything else unusual too...its better to be thorough then assumptive!!

Just in case anyone is curios I took everything apart just to find that the insides of the pilot were more or less disintegrated, only had a handful of needles floating around in there, so while everything was apart I went ahead and put a new slave, clutch, pilot, and had the flywheel resurfaced.

Thanks for the help!

I just started having the same problem yesterday. Nasty intermittent noises when with the clutch depressed. Clutch won't disengage either. I tried to roll the car down the driveway with clutch depressed and tranny in first... I had to shift into neutral for the car to roll (even with clutch depressed).

I wanted to ask if you knew what could cause the pilot bearing to go bad repeatedly? I replaced mine with the last clutch change (along with EVERYTHING else to do with the hydraulic clutch assembly) not too long ago and it seems to have happened again.

Could be a bent input shaft on the transmission causing this.

No doubt, this could be relative to a damaged/bent input-shaft. How does the end that fits in the pilot look? Have you checked entire length it for straightness?

How far can you drive with this problem? I am in the military driving home on leave and my car started making this noise. I am 300 miles in of an 800 mile one way drive. Will it last 1100+ miles?

NO, When the bearing goes it goes fast. Keep your fingers crossed. Never buy a rebuilt bearing or one made in RED China. Those communists laugh at us.

It is hard to know how long the bearing will last relative to mileage...but I would suggest being careful and keep an eye on any changes in function, sound, etc... Be safe and let us know if you need anything else!
