How much clearance needed to lift transmission?
Just curious: how high, roughly, does the car need to be to remove the transmission.
I'm looking at maybe buying the race ramps 12" cribbing, but wasn't sure if a foot would be enough for a transmission and a jack?
I've considered making the wooden cribbing, but I like how the race ramps are a bit more compact.

12" will do it if you're willing to let the trans roll on the floor and drag it out. If you want it on the jack, add the collapsed height of the jack to the 12"

Sounds like I need to go higher. Too bad... The race ramps seemed like a decent solution. Guess ill have to go buy some wood and drag out the miter box.

I may have misread you. I was thinking 12" clearance under the bottom

They're pricier than building wooden crib working, but it'll be a heck of a lot easier to store.

I think mine are 12s, maybe 10s and I did it with the race ramp cribs. the main issue is the floor jack transmission rig I had was too tall. I had to McGiver a little wooden miter box set up, but it did install. Took the wife only 5 minutes of jacking it up while I aligned it and started 2 bolts.
The jack stands were loose and just as a safety. If you look to the front drivers side wheel you can see the Race Ramps logo.

Are the race ramps cribs really just foam?
I'm going I have to steal your transmission jack idea. I was going to get a fancy adaptor for my floor jack, but it looks like that did the trick just fine for a portion of the cost....
And when Im done it'll be one less thing to store.

I had the fancy one, but it was at least 5" too tall.

That little trick is a tad more complicated than it looks.
I used this:

I took the rubber off and bolted it to the bottom of the miter box for stability.
