Default Question about drill mod?? come on in if you have done it!!!

Question about drill mod??
Ok so I did the drill mod but the 1/8 drill bit would not fit in the metal fitting on the end. so I used the next size smaller bit 7/64. this bit "was a tite fit" and comepleted the mode with that bit.. Is this going to work?? Problem??

I don't think it will be a problem, but it won't be much(if any)better than before.
Of course the bit doesn't fit, that's why you were drilling it, to make the hole bigger than it was! You didn't really do the drill mod, just all the hard work to doing it.

You should have used the 1/8" bit. All you did was clean up the restriction. Not much of an improvement if any.

Yes he really did the drill mod. The restriction is farther down in the line. I also used the next smaller bit cause i only wanted to drill out the restriction, not ream out the hole. Pontiac, if you put your 7/64 bit in the hole you can feel the restriction a little ways in right.

That extra bit helps, believe me. They say 1/8th of an inch for a reason!

the bit fit into the conector. but stoped at the restriction. thats what I drilled. I thought the resrtiction was the problem not the conector........anyone done it my way and had to go back and do it again with 1/8 cause the 7/64 did not work????

Yeah, you should be fine. the restriction is the prob.Sorry, I misunderstood what you meant. As they say,"the bigger, the better" but .109(7/64) vs. .125 should work fine.

I noticed the same size issue when I did mine. Someone else drilled it to 7/64" and I opened it up to 1/8". I didn't notice a difference after I opened it up. It did open up the connector ID a little more. Clean it out well after drilling. Compressed air works great.

Yeah I have thought about doing this mod. Is it always a good thing? Any chance of bad side effects from it?

No down side except more abuse on drivetrain due to more abrupt clutch engagement.

So is it better to wait for an upgraded rearend before doing it?

Does it make an aftermarket clutch more or less streetable?

Enough to start breaking stuff with occasional trips to the track on street tires? I'm thinking that if I do the mod I'll put a diff girdle on to try and beef things up a bit. Would this be enough, or would I have the possibility of messing up the tranny or breaking teeth on the ring & pinion?

You have a M6. There is always the concern of blowing up the 10 bolt.

Or hurting the tranny! Mine locked in 4th after my first trip to the track after adding Spec stg3 and drill mod(Lt's ORY too), had to beat it out of gear, then was locked out of 3-4. Made it home from the track with 1st,2nd, and 5th. Went down and saw my tranny apart yesterday. The 3-4 slider key broke and lodged in the 3-4 synchro. My mech. said a shifter w/stops would have prevented this. I have my stock(optional Hurst) shifter w/me at work, gonna see about drilling and tapping holes and adding stops to it.

I waited 28,000 miles and rebuilt 2 trans before I did the drill mod. (1/8 not 7/64) Do this before anything else. When your rodding and slamming 3rd, the fluid hasn't had enough time to 'flow' back to the m/c cause of the restricker and gear grind is the result. I did the drill mod and no 3rd gear issues. Clutch feels a lot more responsive. When you do a 3rd gear swap, install the 'updated' steel shifter fork for 3rd/4th so it won't bend again. Man I wish I had done this a long time ago.

I know NOTHING about transmissions. How big of a deal is it to add the "updated" steel shifter fork for 3rd/4th? If the tranny is fine right now, should this be done before something happens? Or is it better to just wait until you have to pull the tranny apart?

The reason I asked is cause my tranny stuck in 4th 3 days ago its out and had to ored parts too and did the 7/64 while tranny was out.
