Default Another SPEC HORRIER Story

Well I went to the track last night and on the first pass out I did my burn out and pulled to the line. Launched car at 3500 with BFG DR on car and went to go to 2nd and it couldnt go. Well I nursed it home shifting without clutch and when I came to a stop light had to turn car off and start it in gear. Welltoday after work I pulled tranny and got to the clutch thinking I had a hydraulic problem and found nothing wrong. Well I went ahead and pulled pressure plate off and the disc is HOOKED in the billit steel flywheel stuck. This clutch was put in the car in Dec and car has had 2500 miles put on it. So now I am going to call SPEC on Monday and see what they say. Who makes a better clutch for a street car that will handle dragracing???

Thanks for your input!!!!

Can you post a picture? I can't picture how that would happen.

Mine just did that today... I dumped it at about 3,000rpm and lit them up. That was it, No more clutch. I let it cool for a while pointed it down the driveway and cranked it up. After I beat the crap out of it for a couple of miles it came free. Works like a million bucks. I tried to get it to stick again but I couldnt. I have a Spec3Plus only a couple of weeks old.

Well, thats about it for me. I had been thinking about getting a spec clutch kit for my next clutch when mine goes out. I have been reading nothing but bad about them and this story right here just did it for me. I think Im just going to go with a Z06 clutch. Pace Parts sells it for $359 I think, I couldnt find it anywhere else. Does that price sound about right? Anywhere else I can find it cheaper? Sorry, didnt mean to highjack this thread.

I know it is expensive, but it can take a major ***-whipping. Try a McCleod Twin-Disk. retail at about $1,200, but is a great spec alternative. plus they have good support on them.

I would suggest trying a Ram Powergrip or Powergrip HD. They are the stage 3 and stage 4 comparable, respectively. I daily-drove the Powergrip HD in our '99 Corvette FRC with a D1SC ProCharger, and it put down 630 RWHP and 565 RWTQ! We have the Powergrip and Powergrip HD clutches on special for $369 and $389, respectively. Feel free to give me a call to discuss your options if you have any questions or concerns.

The special is only for a few more days, but give me a call if you are looking to buy one later than this week. I bet we can still honor the price no problem. We also price-match on the Ram clutches.

I have the same problem. SPEC 4F. I just got off the phone with Matt at Spec. 1-800-828-4379 x108.

Here is the problem according to Spec:

The 4F is a more aggressive clutch than they thought. It takes more breakin miles than the 500 for all the other Spec clutches. At some point the clutch disk got hot and stuck to the flywheel. (I would imagine a 2nd gear burnout and a 6K dump would get the disk hot.) This is a problem on the LS1 stuff as well as the Viper and Mustang stuff.

Here is the recommended fix:

Have someone sit in the car and push in the clutch to take pressure off the disk. Put the car in 3rd gear and rock it back and forth until you hear the disk pop. If all this works go drive the car and continue the breakin process.

I will attempt this tonight and report back.

Ain't life grand

THe spec fix does not work. I will be pulling the trans to get the disk out. I talked to Paul and Matt at Spec. 1-800-828-4379 x108, this time. Paul is the manager.

I loved his response to the SPECKNOWN PROBLEM. "Too bad"

I have a SPEC3, 399rwhp, and have done multiple 3200-3600rpm launches on DRs.. managed a 12.2 @ 115 and even a couple 116mph passes, dozen or so 12.3s and about the same 12.4s, all averaging 1.9 60's. I havent had any problems yet.. cept it does chatter once in a while, this is with a alum FW. I was also worried about SPEC problems.. but the deal I got on the clutch I couldnt pass up.

So far so good.. good luck with your next choice.

Disk is welded to the flywheel. I will post pics when I figure out how to get it off.

700 miles between trand pulls is getting old.

You guys are scaring me. I’ve got a SpecIII with about 8000 miles on it and 100 passes at the track (25 passes with 444 RWHP) I haven’t had any issues at all.

Did the clutch give any warning before it locked up?

Here are the pictures. As you can see the disk welded itself to the flywheel on the outter ring of rivets. THe pressure plate side of the disy is hosed as well. It was not close to even and hot spotted the entire pressure plate on the inside. The flywheel is also toast.

Gonna call Spec again.

Wow, that's a completely different clutch design than the stave IV I'm running. I've got the six arms on mine, but there's no springs in it like on the stage III.

Your description sounds similar to the clutch that came with my 6 speed conversion though, the clutch material had relocated to different spots on the pad, and the rivets started cutting into the flywheel pretty bad.

FWIW, I got a new billet steel flywheel from a place for $120 shipped. PM me if you want any more info on it.

You can get the Z06 clutch at Fred Beans Chev. for $497 shipped. That's clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, slave and pilot bearing. You can find them at ls1.com in the sponsor section.
