Default popping out of gear question

I have a 98 z28 with 78,000 miles on it. It occasionally pops out of gear when I drop it into 4th during normal driving conditions. The car still has skip shift and when I go from 1-4 I have no problems at all. The problem happens when I go from 3 to 4. Shifter will begin to shake and pop out, I'll quickly take it out and put it back into 4th and it will be fine. Is it my shifter? It came with the factory hurst shifter. A friend said it was my synchros. All the other gears are fine, no problems with them. Seems to only happen after driving the car for about an hour. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Your 3/4 shift fork is probably bent a lil bit causing the synchro to slip off the gear because in 98 the shift fork was alum. In 01-02 gm changed it to steel like what the cobras and vipers were already using. You can pick up a steel shift fork for like $50.

Do I go to GM for that or can I buy it somewhere else?

You can get it somewhere else. I got mine here. I know there are other places out there I just don't have many links since I'm on an old comp I don't use much. Search the forums I'm sure you could find some links for T-56 upgrades.

So what is involved with installing the shift fork? I'm not very mechanically inclined so any dismantaling would be done by a shop. Any idea of cost for labor?

To operate on a shift fork, Trans has to be totally ripped open: about $150 to $200 at a descent Trans shop. Shift forks shouldnt be too expensive, but if it were your synchros, youd hear it!
