I rebuild trannys about 4-5 per week. When I first started a few years ago I would say a 9. Now it comes so naturally. If you are unsure send it to someone that is proficiant in doing it. I am rebuilding one now that the guy tried to do himself to save money. It is the worst one I have done to date. It is very tiediest and should not be taken lightly.

If you are even the least bit mechanically inclined, I'd say =< 4.

Try completely going through and rebuilding an auto tranny...that's where you get into the fun stuff.

I had to rebuild my Omni transaxle a couple of times. It was a little difficult to remember how it all went the first time, but no problem after that.

What sucked is I was up all night rebuilding the last one, got it all back together, filled it with fluid, then turned around and saw the reverse sprocket sitting on the floor.

For a moment, I almost considered just pushing the car whenever I needed to back up. I then decided to rip the trans back apart and put it in.

Ive done both auto and manuals( for25years) Autos can be done in your sleep. Manuals take a little more care - mostly not to damage parts on dis-assembly/ reassembly. If you are in doubt don't do it yourself( either one). It will cost you more than getting it done right if you get it wrong. That doesn't take into account the extra down time you will have.

I'd say for someone with no experience or correct tools - 9
With some experience and a few tools - 6
For some with experience and the correct pullers and pliars - 2

Lots of small parts in there and for me the hardest part of the whole process is getting 5-6-r shift rails to stay in place while setting the front plate on it . This is usually easier with 2 people doing it .

Thats why you build them "up " from the plate. Rails and gearset in place and then lower the case over top. It also helps if you put the plate over a 5 gal. bucket so its lower than a typical table.

Any write ups or books that explain how to rebuild it? Where is the best place to buy the rebuild parts?

Thanks

for the manual serach ls2.com, its there for free in pdf format, along with a how to thread with lots of pics...and yes you should build it up from the plate.
