Are all T56's in GM vehicles interchangeable?
I am curious if all the T56 equiped vehicles have the same T56 in them. Are there differences in the length of the shafts? Are there any differences w/ regards to electronics? I was thinking of buying a t56 out of a wrecked 04 GTO to have as a spare for my 98Z28 M6 402 project. Will I have a problem?

The GTO transmission will fit the Camaro, but the gear ratios are different. First is 2.97 vs 2.66 in the f-body (except 93). It isn't exactly "wider", but the distribution is different. Some gaps (1->2, 4->5) are actually narrower in the "wide" ratio trans. The only gap that is noticeably wider is 3->4.
The synchros are actually better in the GTO trans. It has triple cone synchros on 1,2, double on 2-6, and single on reverse only. The f-body version has doubles on 1,2 and singles on everything else.
I have a 2.97 GTO trans (built by RPM Transmissions) in my 2001 Z28 now, so I am quite certain that it will fit
The 2.97 gearbox was also used in the C5 Z06, and of course the GTO is a heavy car, so it's clearly not too fragile, but it may not take as much torque as the stock gearbox. Depending on how brutal your launch technique is, and how much of a beast that 402 will be, you might be better off with a 2.66.
However, I'm quite happy with my 2.97

Good point. My torque arm isn't mounted to the transmission, so I didn't pay much attention to that part of it. However, the exhaust bracket uses one of the same holes (from the opposite side), and I'm sure they use as few different castings as possible.
So, while I'd be very surprised if it didn't fit the stock torque arm, I can't promise it. However, Rodney at RPM told me it would fit before he knew I had a different torque arm

You may need to move some external brackets from your stock transmission to the GTO transmission, but all the right bolt holes are there, and all the cables just plug in the same.

BTW, I don't know what output shaft options you have for the GTO trans. The GTO output shaft fits the stock driveshaft yoke, but if you intend to upgrade to the Viper output shaft (and bigger driveshaft yoke) you'll need to talk to a tranny builder to find out if it will fit.
As long as you plan to just bolt in the GTO trans unmodified it won't be an issue.
