Default Pilot bearing removal/install

What is the safest way to remove the pilot bearing? I know there is a tool that can be borrowed/bought, but a part number and/or link would be great.

I don't want to screw this up so please help me out

If possible, see if you can find an autozone that rents a blind hole puller. It is very sturdy and made it a breeze to remove. I have heard of others breaking the pilot bearing puller(it seems to be much more flimsy) from autozone.

The deposit is $140, but you get it back when you return it.

A quick question. I pulled the transmission this weekend, but left the bellhousing and clutch installed.

I reach in and was able to see that the pilot bearing is probably going to need to be replaced since it's as good a time as any to replace it. The inner race seems pretty loose so I will be going with a bronze bushing.

My question is, can you pull the pilot bearing without removing the clutch and bell housing? Granted, it's another 20 minutes to pull the bell housing and clutch, but its just that much more of a pain when putting everything back together.

It looks like I might be able to do it, but I wanted to hear other peoples stories and maybe see some pics as well.

Alchemist, I cannot say for sure if you can get remove the pilot bearing with the clutch and bellhousing on. Just go rent a 'blind pulley puller' from autozone (that's where I rented one) and try it. If it can't reach with the clutch and bellhousing on, you will then have to remove it. Good luck!

Looking at the blind hole puller, I think I can do it without pulling the clutch disc and pressure plate.

Could the bad pilot bearing been that ticking sound I've been hearing???? The sound was coming from the back of the motor, so I guess it could have been the pilot bearing or the throwout bearing.

We'll see after the tranny gets rebuilt and the bronze bushing goes in.

Exhaust leak or injector noise??? My LT's "tick". Small leak. That's it.

Nope you can't remove the pilot bearing with the clutch in there.

I guess that's the voice of experience Pete. Did you use the blind hole puller or the other pilot bearing tool? I'm going to pick up the blind hole puller from Autozone and see what happens. If the clutch and bellhousing need to come off, then so be it, but I'll try with them in place at first.
