Default Ring & Pinion pattern, please interpret.

I spent maybe 5 hours experimenting with the gears in my rear axle, adding shims, removing.. It took me an hour to figure out that I needed to torque down the pinion nut to get the pinion gear to sit nicely.. Anyways, it's got the proper preload.. here's how my pattern is right now.. NO shims on the pinion gear. I havent checked the backlash, it feels nice and tight, no grinding or slack.. just a tiny click. How does it look? I've got the old pinion bearing (ground out a bit with the dremel) and the old race in.. Im having a hard time getting it out with a small sledge and a big craftsman screwdriver.. Anyone know how to get the races out?

rear end is a Corporate 10 bolt (8.5"), 4:10 Motive Gears, Detroit TrueTrac.

pics.
drive side..

coast side.

another.

any help appreciated, i've never done this before.

Have you checked the pinion depth w/a pinion depth gauge?
Looks like alot of heal contact to me.

nope. where do I get one of those? I sold off the original gears so I cant do the subtract thing.. does it need to be deeper? i cant remove any shims to make it shallower.. there arent any.

Ya more shim, I've seen some cheap depth gauges at summit & jegs. I cannot remember which one. But one has a cheap single purpose rig, Like a 8.5 GM 10 bolt or 9" there all seperate. Otherwise the regular pinion depth gauges come as a set to do most diff's. They are more $$ The cheapest I have seen is $300+ for a decent one.

Dont forget to get the backlash set too, .008-.012" that is also important to the contact pattern once the proper depth is established.

Just curious, what do you do with a pinion depth gauge when your gears don't come with the pinion depth marked on them? (such as GM factory gears).

You have a heavy toe which means remove shims if you have the right backlash.
I would stick a .030 shim on the pinion, reset the backlash and then pull another patern.
You can go way to far in one direction to where it dont make sense anymore, so try the pinion .030.

Keep us posted.
