Default what should i do to my trans to hold up to 500rwhp??? what clutch too?

hey guys....

well, i've been thinking for a little while today and i'm thinking now about keeping the '99 t-56 in the car because i LOVE driving the car and a th350 rmvb trans with an 8" converter & 4.30's just wont let me do that!

anyway, what can the t-56 hold up to at a track power wise? my setup should be right around 2800lbs with me in the car, 28" drag radials, & 4.30's out back, and close to 500rwhp with a good head/cam/intake pkg. there will never be any spray put through this trans either. so, i need to know.........

1) what shifter?.....i'm thinking Pro 5.0

2) what clutch?.......500rwhp & daily driven & plenty of highway driving. (about 10,000 miles/yr max)

3) any internal work needed? the trans has roughly 60,000 miles on it, but doesn't seem to have any problems at all.

fyi, i've got an aftermarket slave & master, so i should be good to go in that area.

thanks in advance,
Dave

I'm curious as to what these trannies will hold as well. I'm puttin down 470 through a 9 inch and there's still about 60 rwhp comin, can the T56 stand up to it?

i've been reading up on a post in here about what clutches everyone is running and i see there is a big thumbs up for the ls7 w/ls2 flywheel, and the Trextalia OZ700. for the price, and the power limits i'll quickly reach on a h/c/i combo, it looks like the best bang for the buck will be the ls7/ls2 combo. any disagreements? i would love to keep a stock feeling clutch and this seems as though it would be the optimal choice.

I put 10k on mine with 480rwhp and about 20k with 640rwhp after that. Went to the track about once a month during spring and summer. Bone stock tranny other than clutch and Pro 5.0 shifter. Previous car had 90k miles when I put the blower on. Also about 480rwhp with no problems. Don't abuse the thing and you should be fine.

Pro 5.0 shifter
Ls7/ls2 flywheel
upgraded Hydraulics

If your worried about your tranny, check out T56rebuilds.com, they offer great packages for the power your gonna throw at it .

I think the ls7 clutch will hold up awesome, but from your sig, if your guna spray it a h/c/i setup. you might be putting it on borrowed time.. anyother way should be fun, goodluck

Edit: sorry just read your 1st post all the way this time, and i definally think youll be okay that you wont be spraying it.

My friend in town was launching the crap out of his 01 Z28. had cam,longtubes,12 bolt, spec clutch, 125 shot and STOCK tranny. He was doing 6k launches on slicks and skinnies spraying in 1st gear and still didnt hurt the tranny(over 50 passes) and running 10.3's- 10.9's .. but it your worried upgrade your internals.

The stock shift forks and synchros are really weak. Just got my tranny rebuilt with steel shift forks and some better synchros the tranny feels like a million bucks. Over time on the stock you will see the gears are harder to get in and out. And I am also using a clutchmaster clutch which can hold up to 700 hp. It pretty much has stock pedal feel as well. If your doing 4 and 5000 rpm clutch dumps your ls7 clutch will last about 3 months trust me i just chunked mine. LOL. Oh and the pro 5.0 is money WELL spent and get it with the short stick 2nd to 3rd shift is twice as easy as stock.

thanks for the info guys, this really helps alot. i think i'm gonna have to give t56 rebuilds a call and get a quote. when i go to the track, i figure i'll likely be in the 4500-5000rpm launch range if i want to maximize a run so i may have to go with the Tex, just depends on funds i guess.
