Default t-56 gone!

ok i was passing a semi i downshifted into 5th and got past him and i went to go into 6th and i had trouble getting back into 6th gear it finally went back in then about 30 seconds later it made a bang sound and i lost all my gears except 4th gear i could put it in 1-3 5-6 and reverse without even touching the clutch but i still have movement in 4th and it throws itself out of 4th and all the other gears and in neutral it makes a whiningsound with a lil bit of grinding....does anyone have any suggestions as to what happened? and i found a 2002 6 speed 4 1500 with 21000 miles on it what will i have to change besides the bellhousing to work on my car its a 95 lt1 with a t 56. thanks.

The front plate, input shaft and bellhousing are different on the LT1. Sounds like you could have either a cluster issue or mainshaft problem. I would lean towards the cluster based on the noise you have. If you can still drive it in all gears it is not the cluster. If you lost everything but 4th it could be the teeth on the cluster gear are gone. If you only have 4th that is a very bad thing. Drain the fluid and see what it looks like. If there is alot of metal i would lean towards the cluster.

The cluster is referred to as the counter shaft and it controls all of the gears inside the trans. Yes you can get just those parts or use them off your current trans and then the LT1 would work.

If you lost all gears but 4th gear , you broke the input shaft and the counter shaft that runs against it . Most of the time this is due to excessive power or lack of fluid in the unit . Considering the fact its a T56 , I'm going with the lack of fluid but you will know for sure when its pulled apart . If the gears look like some one took a torch and melted the teeth off , its a lack of fluid . If it looks like someone took a hammer to them then its excessive power .

As far as making the LT1 unit fit , change the front plate and the inputshaft as long as the unit is from a 94-97 model car . If for some reason its a 93 unit , it won't work .

Because the power is transferred through the counter shaft to the other gears . I personally think you broke both the input and cluster gear .

Oh you won't have any trouble seeing whats broken when you pull the front plate off ..........

As for a break down sheet on the transmission :

I totally forgot about this but its 100% possible that you broke the 3/4 fork in the 4th gear position . Do you have neutral ? If not , thats what it is . If you do have it then you busted the input and cluster .

Either way, it has to come out and come apart- so I'd get going on that. There is nothing that is magically going to fix itself with the trans still in the car . Get it pulled, pull the front cover and take a peek inside. From there, decide what you want to do- fix it or just buy another unit.

when its in neutral it makes a whining sound and it will go through all the gears but all of them sound like neutral except 4th... but if i busted the input shaft shouldnt i not have anything when its in 4th...btw kwiksilverz its freaking snowing and the winds blowing 20 mph if u want u can pull it out but im staying inside untill it quits!

I guess you haven't tried that trans mechanic in a can ? Add one bottle of it and top it off with ATF . Guaranteed to restore all the parts to brand new condition . I think its made from the same company that makes the paint restore stuff when your car gets keyed to hell . Its a little expensive but worth it .............

J/K with ya .........
