PRO 5.0 is pretty popular.
B&M ripper seems most like the 5.0 better.
The most used I think is the stock hurts and add a lous,ws6,umi short stick for quick short shifts.
I have the hurst and the lous and I'm really happy and its easier to get into gears.

I love the click of the pro 5.0. If you have a more refined taste and are less of a hardcore racer type, then i would look into the stock hurst. mabie see if your friend wants to trade???

I have a Hurst Pro Billet in my Firebird. Love to feel of it (similar to my friends pro 5.0 but without the "clickiness you described) and the look of the polished stick with Hurst etched into it and a classic black shift ball.

I took out the stock Hurst from my SS and went with the Ripper, but having previous experiences with the ripper in a T5 and another T56 car of my own really made the decision easy for me... not a huge fan of the pro 5.0's myself but I'd not say no to one if the price were right

I have the stock Hurst in my SS...with Lou's short stick and I like it. I have had this setup since Lou himself put it in my car back in 2002. I have never driven another car that had something different so I have no point of reference....but like I said....I like it!
