Gets stuck in reverse, although shifter not IN reverse
I tried doing some searching but I haven't found anyone with similar problems - mostly just people who have problems getting INTO reverse, or having it pop out of reverse.
I can shift into reverse without issues and move around just find. However, when I pull the shifter out of reverse the car will stay in reverse. If the shifter is in neutral position, I can let out the clutch and I'll still move backwards. If I throw it in a forward gear, the car is "stuck" like the trans is pulling both ways. Only way I can get out of reverse is just keep pulling it into and out of reverse and eventually it will come out into neutral.
Last year it did this 2 or 3 times all summer, this year it does it 9/10 times when I go into reverse. Only difference between then and now is I put in a Powergrip clutch and had the shifter off and back on. It's a Pro 5.0 shifter.
Is there any chance this is somehow shifter related, maybe something with the stops on the Pro 5.0 being out of whack or something? *shrug* Really hoping I don't have to pull the trans to have it fixed.

Definitely odd. One thing that comes to mind would be a broken snap-ring on the Rev shift fork. I don't see the shifter being a cause since the trans stays in Rev when the shifter moves to fwd gears.
I'd say it's time for a trans pull and rebuild. At least get it up in the air, drain the fluid and have a mechanic pull the shifter/trans tail and inspect the Rev linkage/fork/etc.

In a spooky coincidence, I just started working on a C5 T56 last night with similar symptoms, but also had random 5/6 problems.. As soon as the tail cover was pulled, I saw the broken guide pin shaft stuck to the magnets. The shifter linkage was engaged in 2nd, but the reverse fork/synchro was also engaged.
I wouldn't recommend driving very far/fast/often until you can get that trans checked out..

Oh I thought it was hard to get into reverse. Its not the shifter. The stops only prevent over shifting and bending the shift forks but truely you dont even neeed them.
I would agree with the above posts, snap ring.
Not sure on how much it will cost you? Im not a trans guy.
