Talking t56 internals

I have a good question. I have a t56 out od a 99-2000 trans am, the trans needs a full rebuild. I also have a t-56 out of an 2006 corvette z06, I assume that the internals for the z06 are stronger and was wondering if they can be put inside the case of the trans am tranny as I want to bolt it up to a 07 l92 with approx 500-525hp, will this work?

I'll say it'll definitely maybe will work.. ;-)

You can definitely use the internals from a C5 T56 ('97-'04) with additional parts. There were a few upgrades to some of the C6 versions, including an integrated fluid pump, one piece countershaft, and larger mainshaft output splines. I haven't personally torn open a C6 unit yet to say for sure though.

Where are you located? I'd be glad to give you a hand, if it's not too much of a hike.

C6 units as well as C5 units have triple / double syncro assemblies . You could probably use a GTO main shaft and those internals but as is , they will not work .

So you are saying that the inside dimensions of the two trans are different?
Cuz my thoughts are if the input shafts are the same splines and length and diameter and the output is the same then shouldn't the guts fit. By adding more blocking rings doesn't that mean they would have modified internal parts for clearance. This is just my theory. I have not had alot of experience with them besides r+ring them here at the dealer.

Top mainshaft is a '93-'02 Fbody, the bottom mainshaft is the C5. You can see the machining differences that accommodate the double and triple synchros.

Please bear with the noob questions. So the red circled areas go into the back of the input shaft am I right? now why wouldnt the input shaft of the vette tranny work if indeed the red circled areas go in to rear of the input shaft.

Yes, those areas go into the input shaft. (The C5 mainshaft just has the inner bearing race left on it)

The C5 mainshaft is totally different in the rear, to work in the '93-'02 F-body case. (Too long, no splines, etc.)

(*) C5 shaft is broken off in above pic, it's really about 8" longer. The C6 has an even different mainshaft, but it may just be thicker.

As was stated before, you need the GTO mainshaft.

I got one (in the pic) from thegearbox this Summer.. It was $279 iirc. Tremec price increase, no doubt, has them on the rise.
