Default Indiana window tint law

Is this:

What is the Indiana law concerning tinted windows?
No vehicle may be operated in which a windshield, side wing, side window which is part of a front door, or rear back window has been covered or treated with sunscreening material or tinting that would prevent the occupants of the vehicle from being easily recognized or identified through the window from outside the vehicle

Did you know that? Technically it's illegal to put dark tint on the hatch, and it sounds as if the % you use is open to interpretation. What % do you think you can use and not get hastled too much? Do any cops know or care about the law? I was/am going to put like 5% on my hatch....

I've always been told by police that 35% was the legal limit.

I've heard that as well. The law is written in a qualitative context, but if you quantify it 35% sounds about right.

I have 5% all around and I have the windshield done in 5% about 8-10" down. Never been hasseled. I've been pulled over and the cop never said a word about the tint.

I had 5% all around on my thirdgen and only got hassled once years ago. I heard also that 35% is the limit on side windows but back was 20%. Who knows.

I have 15 % all the way around and haven't had any problems in over 2 years of having it on. Been pulled over numerous times as well, and not 1 cop has mentioned anything about my tint.

The law is 35% all the way around the vehicle. On a tint meter there is a +/- 2% for error. If I read the new fees correctly there is a $150.00 fine for it, and the tint must be removed if a ticket is issued. If you receive a written warning in the town I patrol in (Shelbyville) you must remove the tint and bring it by the station for someone to verify it has been done. I believe that is the case anywhere.

Captain, do you enforce that much or do you just kinda let it go most of the time? I could see how extreme dark tint would be a scary thing walking up on a car in the middle of the night, not knowing if they have a gun or not knowing how many passengers are in the car...etc..

I would assume that with tint it's an even better idea than normal to roll the window(s) down upon being pulled over.

I do wonder how much it's enforced. I still plan on limo tint for the hatch and the windows are undecided....25%-35%.

It depends if I want to enforce it or not. It makes for a legal stop. I have wrote only 1 ticket for it.

Uhmm how would you roll down the rear window if the tint on it is illegal? lol

I don't consider the hatch a window.

I did not know there was a legal limit for the hatch. How can there be? After all, there are vehicles out there that don't even have a back window you can see the driver through. Would you possibly write a ticket for having tint darker than 35% on the hatch?

He has seen my car several times and hasn't wrote me a ticket yet.
You can ask him, my windows are really dark. The main reason
I have it like that is my eyes are really sensitive to sunlight. I have
a hard time seeing when it is really bright out. I have talked to my
eye doctor about this and he said it is somewhat normal.

Benny, Is there a contractor that calibrates the tint meter and how often are they recalibrated?

as said 35% is what most people call legal, but they said 30% gets no problems at all. 5%.. well yeah.. personaly id never tint the hatch a diffrent % than the side windows because i think it looks goofy, but thats just me
