Default Can anyone give me some advice on joining the USAF?

Ive been a long time poster here, but I have not posted lately. Ive been working alot lately and would love to join the Air Force just because of the whole lifestyle and being able to go to school. Right now Im stuck working and going nowhere. I am 22 years old, and other than a few traffic tickets, I am clean. I have tried weed a handful of times, but never done any other drugs than that. I really want to move on with my life and start a career. What advice can you guys give me? I am being told that you cant really get in the USAF right now, but I called a recruiter and they said they DO have job openings, but i never heard back from him. I talked to a marine recruiter once before and got a 72 on my ASVAB practice, but I think I could do a bit better on the real one. I have 17 college credits and read that I can get E2 if i have 20, but I also read that I can enlist for 6 years and get E2. Will that work out the same If I enlist for 6 years vs taking another class to get E2? Will I get the option to enlist for 6 years? Is that available to all?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

I'd say talk to Frisky. He's given good advice on here, compared to some other jackasses that post sometimes.... I bet I know why he sent a PM lol. You can get in, but it won't be for a minute. They're cutting even more AD members this November. Its fun fun for us all staying in...

Can you elaborate on the minute thing? Are they cutting like normal hardworking able bodied people or the bottom of the bunch type thing? I'm going to DEP next week, and probably open electronics to save time waiting over a guarenteed job but it sounds like maybe I should have stuck with Army the way you make it sound. If you could elaborate more I'd appreciate it.

high demand fields are always available, you need to work on that ASVAB score.

CCT, PJ, SOWT, TACP, SERE, EOD.

You can get E-2 at 20 credits. I'm speaking from experience. It's a nice little bonus, but it really isn't much.

If you aren't sure how dedicated you want to be, you could join the air guard or reserves.

If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask. You should be able to get in. ASVAB could be a bit better, but please do yourself a favor and don't be a cop or maintenance unless you're really ****** dedicated.

We're still seeing normal amounts of trainees comming through BMT. Of course the Air Force is back to the force shaping once again, cutting 6,000 airman.

Just make sure your in good phisical shape before showing up to BMT and have a job with contract in hand.

When I was enlisting in '06, you would get E-3 for a 6 year enlistment.

My recruiter was telling me yesterday that she is only allowed to process 2 people per month right now (MEPS) and yes there are job openings but from my understanding there are about 4x as many people as open jobs. I swore in Dec 10, 2009, still no ship date for BMT and I am going for one of their high demand jobs (TAC P) if that gives you any kind of idea. Expect to wait a few months.

Damn that sucks. I'd have no problems waiting 6 or so mths on DEP if I had'nt been waiting almost a year for a freakin medical waiver already

I went through MEPS in Jan 2010 and got a contract for TACP in March. I leave for BMT in June. Guess I got lucky and got in pretty quick compared to a lot of people.

You bastard ! Jk

I went through MEPS December 10th and I am going for TACP ...still no ship date and from the sound of it I might not get a contract for the next few months. Im starting to wonder wtf is going on since Ive heard from many people that TACP needs people.

I check in every Monday, never bug my recruiter, but they insist on telling me to be patient -_-.

Damn, E2 for a 6-year enlistment? When I came in in '99 it was E3 for 6 yrs. Times are getting tough I guess. To the OP - please when you get in.. don't be a jackass. seriously.. I work with too many idiots already, I don't think we can afford another in our ranks. Just work hard and practice the core values - even if others aren't.
