Took a whack at porting
Like the title says, I got the dremel out and started cutting on my 241's. As it is I have unported 98 heads on my TA and wanted to upgrade to something better but didn't want to just throw them on stock. What do you guys think?

i just finished doing my heads too.......it is almost pointless without a flow bench so i didnt take much off the intake side just opend the cathedrel up a little and cleaned then as for the exhaust side i used a header gasket as a template and opened them up alot......exhaust you want a mirror finish and intake you want it to be rough.
you do a valve job or just lapp them?

I was planning on taking them to my machine shop here and having a 5 angle valve job done to some Fererra(SP) valves.
These were on my friends car and there were some marks left from the exhaust gasket so I opened them up half way to the edge of the marking just to be safe. I did take the bump out of the upper part of the exhaust port and smoothed the cathedral on the intake like you did.
All in all it was fun to play with them and I can say that I did "some" port work to the heads myself when people ask what has been done to the car.

kool but you didnt touch the important area around the valve...and i wouldent be surprised if you make less power then they would stock..you opened up the runners and slowed the velocity of the air comming in...and then around the valve you took nothing out so the air will hit a huge restriction when it gets there....

Cool. I am very new at this so I have some green questions. What is that protrusion near the valve seat? Is that a support piece or is that what they call the swirl ramp? Is that a good thing to keep or not?

I would work the valve guide area. In performance engines class in college I had to gain 10% flow on a budget world products head. I simply shaved the valve guide area down and smoothed it into a tear drop shape and improved the flow over 10% without enlarging the port at all. Just my .02

Ok....I got some longer sanding rolls and took all the casting off as far in as I could. On the exhaust side I went as far as to sand it with 400 grit paper. It's smooooooooth now.

I've only gotten one head completely finished but I think I only have 5 hours in them so far. In the pics at the top of the page I had both heads in that state but only have one completed in the second set of shots. I figure I have another 2 hours to go and I will have them done. All in all I would have a days work on these were I in a shop so I guess that's not all that bad.

ya with that much time just spend the 50 bucks and see what they do

you need to take the valves out and rework the turn radius and the valve seats
all that " porting" you're doing is basically useless (* ok maybe 3 WHP ) without reworking the other parts and smoothing out around the valve seat ---> aluminum casting area.
that area is your biggest gain... working the bowls and a EXTREMELY good valve job
