zexel torsen question
don't know where else to post this...
i have a '98 3.8L A4 w/ 3.08 gears. i'm looking for a zexel torsen lsd. i'm under the impression that i need a 2-series carrier, but can anyone tell me if a 3-series carrier can be made to work?

3.08 gears= 2 series carrier
12. What is a series 2 or series 3 carrier, and what do I have?
A 2 series carrier is a car that came with 3.08s or lower from the factory (i.e. all of your 2.73 cars). A 3 series carrier is a car that came with 3.23s or higher. This is very important when you order new gears, as they will differ from 2 to 3 series carrier!

I have a 2 series that came out of a 2002 firebird that had 2.73's if you're interested. I do not have the block that goes in the center though.

No. You can use a 2 series carrier with a ring gear spacer if you were using 3.23's. But you can't use 3.08's or lower with a 3 series.

You'll probably find a 3.23 chunk with the ring gear
still on it, for the same price as a bare Torsen. You'd
have to deal with the speedo change which is about
a 10 minute job with the tuning tool ('most any will
handle it). Since any carrier swap "theoretically" wants
a fresh setup, I wouldn't worry about keeping gears
unless you really love that ratio.
