Default gonna be buying a c5, advice?

so first post on here, had a bunch typed up, deleted it, who would wanna read it all. amirite? so i'll just get down to it.

i am in the market for a new car and i'm looking at a c5 manual targa and have a crown vic for the winter.

I don't plan on having a HUGE project the second i get it but i do have a goal of wanting 420 rwhp (though i may be happy with the stock hp or find a butter zone for me during modification but i'll have to wait and see)

I have read stickys and have checked around and came up with...

Mods to do in time segments (and get it tuned when needed)

-1st
C5r headlights, rims and tires, breaks if needed, interior work (nothing major just fix up scuffs), make sure paint is good

-2nd
CAI or ramjet
Lid
Longtubes/xpipe/possible different muffler

-3rd
LSX 90mm Manifold
90mm throttle body

-4th
cam and head

When should i look at a different rear end and what gearing would suit my application best? And a stronger clutch?

does it look like a good otherwise? (or did i miss vital points)

Plan is to find a c5 i like but it may take a while or i could find it tmrw, i hope

thanks for your time

Mike

might add i'm not looking to have the fastest vette i can but to have one that is quick (beat most stock vettes -not zr1 or c6 z06- and ls engine cars -2010 camaro ss- that would be a plus) and i will enjoy driving. but still i may like it stock

Are you looking at the Z06's at all? From what ive read, with the way the tranny is geared its like having 3.89 gears stock which is awesome and im sure its why they can get away with running a more aggressive camshaft and still be really streetable (236+ @.050).

Youll probably need a clutch after the heads/cam b/c its not going to like all that new found power whenever you do it.

Other than that, everything you listed looks good. I dont know much about Corvette's but the guys on the vette forum will let you know if your list is good or not. Oh, BTW theres a vette section on here further down the main page, may wanna ask it in there.

Thanks for the help and info...

well i don't wanna break the bank a on car, so like $14-18k for a 65k-100k mile c5 m6 isnt so bad whereas a c5 z06 is gonna be a pretty penny +$20k or have high milage 140k+ miles and be around $15k...

I'm going for that $14-18k for a 98-00 c5 m6 so i can compete with my friend with a 06 gto who paid 18k.. simalar price but more performance outta the c5

I'll prolly get the 3.89 as a first mod and that will most definetly give me more on the low end, and continue from there...

c5 z06 has a 3.42 stock right? if it has a 3.15 stock i will go with 3.73 then and be the same ratio with a stock c5

All M6 C5s have 3.42 stock and auto C5s have 2.73 standard unless it has the Z51 package and then it's 3.15. Oh and changing rear gears is alot more of a job on the C5 than the F body cars.

so i just did a little research on the gearing and i'll stick with stock rear axle... it gives the same 4th gear basically but all the other gears are taller in the c5 than the z06... so if i was to go for more power it would be able to push it better through the gears and still have decent gas mileage as opposed to new rear and higher cruising rpms...

thx for the info

High performance corvettes and good gas mileage, isnt that like a double negative? look at it this way, lets say you do, all the bolt ons, headers, b&b bullets-my fav, an MS3, rocker arms, pushrods, lifters, timing chain, high volume oil pump, and a fast intake, your probobly going to be in the 450+ rwhp range. Oh crap I forgot injectors and fuel pump. It can get expensive real fast. To some its worth it. Not sure if this helps.

Are you dead set on a vette? If not then I would get an f-body .... Cheaper to buy cheaper to make it fast and soooooo much easier to work on! Also insurance is cheaper! Could also get a 03+ cobra to contend with his goat! I'm sure I'll get death threats for the cobra comment but it's true they make alota power out of the box. I think I hear the threats already lol...
