Should I sell my SS? Help.
My Camaro is no longer my daily driver and the wife is on me to sell it but I would like to keep it as a toy. It is a 1999 SS with 170k miles on it, but in the last three years (and 60k miles) I have replaced the brakes, rotors, clutch, steering linkages, driveshaft, rebuilt the rear end (4.10) gears, tons of other stuff. Plus I did a lot of it myself so I am a bit attached to it.
So here is the problem, if I sell it for lets say $5k (optimistically) I can’t just go out and find another project car that won’t require a ton of work for that price. (or at least all the same work I just put in on my car) Am I just being a sentimental idiot thinking that a car like this is worth dumping in a ton of additional labor and parts into at this point or should I just sell it for what I can and get start saving for a lower millage Camaro/Firebird from some southern state?
At what point do you say “hey this car has been great but the horse is dead” and move on?

Never.....
I personally have had four 4th Gen F-Bodies…. 2 Z28 LT1s and 2 SS LS1s…. and I can tell you for certain, had I of just kept the 1st one and spent all the time and money I have over the years on 4 different cars, I would have one of the nicest F-Bodies on the planet probably LOL! All jokes aside, unless you WANT a different platform, the horse is never dead, and anything can be fixed, modified, or upgraded, for as long as you want.
I say keep it. I always regret dumping a car I love…

X2, unless you want to get rid of it I wouldn't. And honestly if your just selling it for another project I would just keep the SS, you will come out cheaper in the long run. And honestly regardless of what you replaced on the car or how good it runs people won't see past the 170 K on the car when you go to sell it. So like you already said you won't get much for it. So unless you realllllly need the money to pay a mortgage or feed your family I would keep it.

I'm keeping my SS FOREVER, even if it has 400k, it's my dream car and I'm keeping it regardless, even if I get a new car way in the future, I'm still going to have this SS in storage or sitting in the garage. It is now considered a classic.

When your out of town or away from your car for lets say a week or two, do you see other camaros cruising by and say "Man I wish I was driving mine right now"? If you do then I'd keep it. If you could care less and just move on about your day then it's time to sell it.

To the OP:
Are you happy with the overall condition of your current car? If it's got rust/paint/body/interior issues that bug you, it might be worth thinking about getting a lower mileage/nicer condition car to build up. You'd have to think about what it would cost to repair all the age/mileage/weather related issues that bug you, plus what you think you could get for selling the car. If the total of those two numbers is greater than what you can get a nicer, lower mileage example for, then selling might be the better route to go.
Of course, you have to keep in mind that these cars are all 9+ years old now, so many/most will need some level of repair or work to get back to mint condition.

Man I love this site, I leave for lunch and I come back to a pile of actually helpful comments. I do really love the car and since it was laid up (I have to replace the fuel pump) all I think about when I drive the Chrysler 300 to work is when do I get my Camaro back.
She does have a lot of issues so I know that she will never be a show car (all 170k miles were in MN you know) but all I have ever wanted the car to be is a fast and reliable toy to have fun with so it is great to see that I am not nuts for thinking I should keep it.

NEVER EVER LET A WOMAN COME BETWEEN YOU AND YOUR F BODY!!!! Come on man this is how ppl end up with stupid mini vans and crossovers bc of WOMEN. If I had a wife badgering me ab selling a car I love Id find a new wife. In all seriousness though, thats YOUR baby, no matter what is wrong with it. Tell her she wants a new car so bad she can buy it herself. I know Im keeping my z28 forever and no WOMAN will get in the way of that.

No man, F**k that!!! its your toy, u arent making payments on it. Keep the car, you might end up regretting it.
I sold my low mileage 2002 trans am a while back and kicked myself in the *** all the time till i bought another one. This one stays with me forever. And you willl be luck to even get 5 grand in this economy for your car even though it looks clean as hell for the mileage!
