Default Rear end gears..tune required?

Question: If I get a performance shop to install 3.90 gears on my 02 Camaro, do I need a tuner or a speedo gear? Any help would be appreciated.

Tune.

Too bad you aren't out here in LA, I'd do it for you for free.

I have an 02 Fbody license.

There are a lot of fbody owners in Dallas. Check in the regional section and see if someone can hook you up.

Although Im sure there are guys running 3.90 gears there not as popular as other gear choices. Most of the M6 guys go up to 4.10's since with the double overdrive they are still street able and really don't hurt MPG's that bad. And most of the A4 guys don't go any higher then 3.73's if its a street car due to only having 4 gears so its still derivable on the highway without hurting their mileage too bad

I just wanted to get something different from the up graded 3.73 etc. I think 3.90 gears would be interesting. But might need to just go with flow.

It really all depends on your setup, I attached a link for a gear calculator to help you determine what gear is best for your setup. Another thing to consider is if you drag race that you don't go too tall of a gear because it will force you to shift gears before the 1/4 or 1/8 is up and it will hurt your times.

http://www.f-body.org/gears/

Also I noticed in your mod list that you don't have a stall yet. Most auto guys get a stall before gears as they make a bigger difference.

Wow...thanks Starz T/A 17 for the information. I will keep the stall in mind.

Tons of people run 3.90s, enough that I keep them in stock at all times right alongside the 3.73s and the 4.10s, I haven't had anyone regret it. Iv'e had plenty of guys run MPH calculations and they need a 3.90 over a 4.10 to finish the 1/4 in 4th gear, so it all depends on your total setup.

Scoggin Dickey thanks for your input....I just want to go with something different from the norm of 3.73 gears. 3.90's would make me happy and if not I can get something else in later.

@1BlkStealth Did you ever get the gears? If so did you like them? I was looking at your specs compared to mine and it seems like we have a lot alike. Let me know what you think of them please. And do you have a cam?

Sill haven't bought the gears...because my RPM's at 70mph where going to be like 2500. So I have not ordered them. No cam.

If you can try and get a ride with someone that is running gears that would really be the best way to tell unless your actually doing the math to work out a combo for the track.

I would think a 3.90 would be good in a M6 car but may cruise a little high in an A4.
