Default weird noise @startup....

hello, please tell me if this is normal or not for a 98Z28,A4, 30,000 miles.
When I start the car, there is a loud whirring noise, I think it is a fan, but it really hums. After about 5 minutes it stops, and does not come back on. The mornings have been cold, so I don't know why the fan would be actuating. I don't drive the car much, and it has done it more or less the whole 2 years I've had the car. Please help??

Also, lately there seems to be a squeaking noise coming from somewhere, when I put the car in park, get out, and inspect the engine, no noise. But when you drive, you hear it?? I was thinking either a wheel bearing or a U-joint?? What could be hurt from so little use(although I do get on it to test out new parts and such, but not badly..)??

That's the pump for the AIR system when the engine is cold it pumps "AIR" into the exhaust to help warm up your cats faster.

To my knowledge, that system is only on 2001 and 2002 models. The 1998 F-Body did not have an AIR system.

All LS1 f-bods have it.. the only difference on the newer LS1s is that they have a hose that gets fresh air from the factory air cleaner while the 98-99s don't.

about the squeaky noise......make sure your spare tire is fully secured. Get back there and turn the butterfly to make sure it's on there right.

VIP1, its my personal experience that '98s DO have the AIR as well as the EGR provisions. I had a '98 formula ws6, and it definitely had the AIR system. Couldn't miss the whirring when you started her up. If its an f-body LS1, and in stock trim, you've got the AIR system.
