Default Need help. Flowmaster or cut-out

My friend has a 2002 convertable ws6. He likes the way my car sounds with the cut-out and wants to get one. He talked to a guy at a muffler shop today and the guy told him not to put a cut-out on the car cause it will cause problems later on. I told him no way and that guy is trying to sell him a 200.00 muffler. Tim99ws6(my good friend) told me to tell him as long as your not taking your cats off and running it there won't be any problems. Can you guys also put your imput on this so I can print the responses and let him read it for himself. I told him not to worry about the car and it won't hurt it but help it. I have had my cut-out on for a year now and she's running strong. ASK tim99ws6. He knows. lol. Thanks guys for helping me on this with my friend.

The guy that wants to sell him a $200 muffler is full of crap! Even running your car without the cats won't give you any problems as long as you install some 02 sims. Many people here run headers without cats without any problems as long as they follow the above suggestion. I'm not against buying a $200 muffler in any way; most people including myself spend more than 3X this amoung on catbacks not to mention $1000 + headers. My advice to your friend is.....buy whatever sounds best and stop listening to moronic technicians that don't know jack about cars Oh, and my BORLA catback has a built in cut-out and I always run it fully open.

Yea Go the cut-out route, that and Flowmasters suck. I have read that they actually rob HP from your car.

Yup!, the 80 series Flowmaster for the F-body has been proven to decrease HP. My car had one when I bought it, and this was the first thing that I tossed after buying it. They do sound descent, but you could benefit from a better muffler or a cutout.

Why does your friend need any more proof than your car! You have an electric cutout for over a year with no problems.....NUFF SAID! Slap some O2 sims on there and call it a day.

seriously, I know flowmasters are known in the auto industry, but for our cars, it's very clear, STAY AWAY! If he's looking for just the can, go with a magnaflow, it's stainless and sounds kick ***. I know many people with cut outs that no problems whatsoever, and the fact that you can open and close them on command is definately Tig-O-Bitties!

looks like it's an easy decision. Wish some of my questions were that black and white.

Tell your friend to get a QTP electric cutout and put it in the I pipe. Opens and closes in 5 secs and you can go from loud to stock quiet at the flip of a switch. Will also gain you more power than an average catback. For $169 it's like a sore dick you just can't beat it! Also running without cats will not hurt your car as long as you get the AF ratio tuned so it's running correctly. The SES light that illuminates when you remove the cats just tells you that your cats are gone or malfunctioning, the PCM does not do anything to degrade performance it's just letting you know something is wrong with your cats. A set of 02 simms will do away with this or you can completely remove the codes with LS1 Edit as I have done.

I also have a cut out with no cats. I have had no problems. Its a little raspy but sounds great. I would never put flow masters on an f-body, they just dont sound good. A few of my buddies have them on their car, and wish they would have gone with something else.

I've found that most so called techs that work at exhaust shops are just plain ol' fashioned idiots. In fact, tell that to them and go to a different shop... then once your friend has the cutout installed, come by their shop with it uncapped, back it up to their open bays and do a nice big smokey burnout and fill their garage with smoke.
