another gear question thread
3.73 vs 4.10
I do mostly dd but I do plan to make trips to the track this year in my 00 formula m6. I am afraid with 4.10s 1st gear will go through too fast and mess up the 60ft time. Has anyone experienced this? also is a gear swap something I can do in my garage or is this a lengthy job?

well Im not sure how much abuse the 10 bolts can handle. My mechanic messes with some ls1 quite a bit and he says they are stronger than ppl let on. But that is the weak link.
Does anyone car to post a link for some 3.73s for sale for me? I looked on ebay but im not sure im finding the correct gears. Also do I need to replace the bearings and such while im in there or no?

I may pick up this. Is new bearings and such a necessity?

I had Motive 3.90's in my Bird and they worked pretty well.
Advantage is their a little stronger then 4.10's in the factory 10 bolt because of the larger pinion gear and that was why I went that route.
But if you want to do it once and forget about it then a 9" is what I would do.

IMO 3.90's are the way to go. They probably aren't ideal for the mods you have right now but as you start performing different modifications they will start to become a better fit for your car. If you haven't set up a ring and pinion before it's not a good idea to do it without somebody who knows what they are doing. You need a small hydraulic shop press and some other tools to do it the right way. If your contact pattern and backlash aren't right you'll get some noise from the gears and if they're way off you'll ruin them. As far as bearings, they are pretty reliable. Just check them for pitting or scoring.

This may help you decide what gears you want.
T56 Gear ratio calculator
I'd go with 4.10 gears. You'll be going 42mph at 6000rpm in 1st gear, I wouldn't exactly call that running through 1st to fast. Plus you'll still only be turning 2000rpm at 75mph in 6th, or 3000rpm at 110mph.
