Default What's the performance & HP difference between high flow cat vs. no cat

Sometime in the next year I'm going to be getting Long Tube Headers installed, and I was thinking about just deleting the catalytic converter all together because I don't live in a state with inspections.

At some point it dawned me that my wife and I might move out of state in the future, and I would need to pass inspection. Of course I want as much power and dB as possible, but is there a huge difference between the high flowing cats and not having one?

With a basic build there is almost no power difference between good high flow cats and none

Ah, so I wouldn't really benefit from no-cat without a psycho cam or blower?

Yeah basically lol. I mean you might gain like 3 hp up top at the cost of 3 hp down low or something like that, but it's gonna be so small I'm not even sure you could accurately document it on a dyno

Same dyno, same temps, same tuner, same exact mods, etc...?

Gotcha. I've seen anywhere from 0 to 5 hp in general, but there are always exceptions no doubt

If you don't need them don't run them.

If I gut it, but keep the shell... and tune out the post-cat o2, would I be good for inspections?

I've never lived in a state that requires it, so I have no idea how that stuff works.

Really depends on who is inspecting it, but I wouldn't expect it to be too much of an issue.

I agree. If you don't need them, then there's no reason to spend more money for something that will cost power and complicate the exhaust system unnecessarily.

Also agreed. Just because a state has inspections doesn't necessarily mean that you need cats to pass. If there is no visual and no sniff (like my state), and all you have to pass is an OBD scan test, then tuning can easily take care of this. So yes, it's all dependent on the state/test process. Also, some states only test within certain counties or ZIP codes, so even if you're in a test state you may or may not have inspections depending on your address.
