That depends on you, If you are a lil throttle happy with it off you will blow the tires off, if you arent you will bog. With it on you can leave out hard and dont have to worry about blowing the tires off when you leave. Most people that I know that have played with there cars enough to know that happy medium dont use it. I have seen a T/A loose street race when it was used and then win without it. Its normally just driver skill depends on if its is better to use or not use. My $0.02

My 98 did come with the asc button, but I noticed when i installed a cd player, that a hook up wire if hanging free, maybe fo the asc buttton. So, If a get a asc button and connect the free wire, will a deactiveate asc?

If you want decent track times, don't race with it on. You can overpower it even when it's turned on, but the car will still fight you on take-off.

Turn it off when racing or you'll get that nasty bog from the computer kicking your foot out of the throttle.

98ls1rocket,
are you saying that you dont have the ASR button, but during a recent stereo install you noticed that there are some wires behind the dash, posibly wires for the ASR system? if thats what your asking then No, simply getting an ASR button/switch and hooking it up to the wires will not give you tracation control. there is more to it than that.

i read a magazine article where they ran a 13.5 with a stock 98 transam A4 3.23's with over 100000 miles on it. They were only able to get that good of a time with the traction control on. My opinion is that it cant hurt to try it atleast once!

my 2000 has a button on the dash next to the fog light button. Im no expert but i think it would be a pretty big task to install traction control on a non ASR equiped car. you would need the senser things that go on the rear axle, ASR button, wiring, there is also some linkage under the hood

I think you would need a 4 carrier rear end would be the biggest problem.

They must have been running in the rain or on a terrible track. You want it OFF. Not only will it hurt you out of the hole, but anytime you shift and bark the tires, it will kick the throttle off (maybe apply some brake) and then slowly allow the throttle to return to wide open throttle killing your time. I have known a person or two, try to leave with it one to eliminate wheel spin at the launch, and then turn it off as soon as they could, to eliminate the throttle chop at every upshift.

Correct. If you had traction control, you'd have a button to turn it off.

This thread begs a question I've wondered for a while. Has anybody ever tried to tweak the programming of the traction control systems to help prevent wheelspin at launch but not affect the subsequent shifts?
