Default Cam or Headers?

I've got a 99 TA with a six-speed. It's stock except for a Loudmouth and SLP airlid with a K&N Filter.

I've also got a grand burning a hole in my pocket. Which would get me the best results, putting headers on the car, or putting in a cam? With labor costs, it's gonna be about a grand either way.

you should probably get headers first. it would be almost backwards to get the cam first. you should also put aside some of that money for a tune, if you are doing both of those mods.

Default what cam are you looking into

SLP loudmouth breathes really really good...itd be safe to add a cam i would think...but to really make that puppy breathe get headers...

either will probably give you the same power...cam willa ffect torque a lil more i would think with the right tune

A cam wont really benefit without headers. Get the headers first.

I had planned to do headers first, but they are on order and not in yet. In the mean time I went ahead and put in a TSP 224R cam. Runs great, but the kicker is it runs MUCH better with my cutout open. So that's one option, go with the Cam and add a $60 ($35 for hardware, $25 for install) cutout. Then when you get the money, put on headers and keep the cutout. If you need a cheap cutout, I just cut my Summit one out to install a Street Pro Electric. I'd give it to you for $20 plus shipping from Arizona (85226).

Thanks,
Glenn

JRP,
I had always planned to do headers first, but they are still on order. I came across a nice TSP 224R on this board so I bought it. Did the install myself with the help of all the install pages recommended here. I found that you were one of the best sources of good information on this board, thank you!

Car runs great with the cutout open and luckily it's a Street-Pro electric, so whenever I want to get on it, I just hit the switch and go. Otherwise it's closed.

Thanks,
Glenn

'JRP' or 'Glenhl' I have been planning my CAM.

I thought when you did your CAM you would also be looking at stronger springs and rods as well as the headers and tune. Isn't there an increased chance of floating a valve or doing some kind of damage with the heads if you do not upgrade some of the Head parts???

who said you didnt have to swap springs, i think we are all under the assumption that when he says gonna do a cam swap all the neccessary parts like springs are included.

Yeah, I was gonna go with the full kit. But it appears that headers might be a better way to go, so I'll look into that first.

Thanks!

Get a good set of long tubes. I would get Kooks if I were you. TTp has the best price.

Just to clarify, when I did my cam I also put on Patriot Gold Dual Springs, new valve seals, and TSP hardened 7.400" pushrods.

Thanks,
Glenn

With your TSP 224/.581/112 can this be tuned to sound almost stock?

definitely get the headers first, and don't waste your time, go for stainless steel the first time around, they're the best quality. you have my vote for kook's SS.

ActionJack,
I am waiting to get my Stainlessworks headers before I do a tune. So in the mean time the car is running very rich at idle (you can smell it) and I had to screw in my idle screw a little bit and reset the TSP to make it idle good. I've been told that the tuner will up the idle speed to 950rpm and just by using the throttle I can tell that it will sound very stock! It has a nice lope at around 800, but a little too much for my taste. But at 950 it is barely noticeable. I like this cam a lot and can't wait to get my headers and then get it tuned. I'm hoping for around 370 hp with the cutout open. The last mod that I'm not sure about is to do a home porting job on the throttle body. Not sure if it's worth it or not.

Thanks,
Glenn
