Default wheel bearing?

I have a strange "tick tick tick" kind of noise coming from the driver side rear of my 98 ws6 m6. It’s not metallic but more of a light thud type of noise. I believe it is somewhat noticeable through feeling (you can feel the thuds)

Is this a wheel bearing? It increases in speed with the car (not the revs). How can I tell if it’s the bearing?

If it is the bearing, should I replace both sides of the rear? There's an inner and an outter bearing, right?

I think there is just an outer bearing. I tried to change mine awhile ago and there was no way in hell it was going to come out. I tried using a torch, bearing pulley, and a slide hammer. I took it to Midas and they had to use a hydraulic press to remove it.

I would check the brakes & caliper first. It is possibly a bearing if so it is service as a whole hub/bearing assembly.

if the bearings are the same as my 99 then they are just an assembly. with four bolts. Also could it possibly be coming from the rear end? like the side bearing in the diff, or a possible ring noise?

i dont know. it seems like its coming from the drivers side rear. my dad said the same thing, and he's got hearing problems heh. he said that i'd have to take the axle out and have the bearing removed and the new one pressed on. is that true?

how long should it take for a shop to replace a bad wheel bearing?

Midas did both sides of my car in a couple hours. I suggest taking it there and letting them guess what the problem is. There are many things it can be, and they can actually test it and find out.

i replaced mine in my driveway, using a slide hammer and this set of bearing pullers i got at O'Rielly's, and i didnt get raped by Midas, they quoted me like $300, when you can spend about $15 on each bearing, $2 on each seal, maybe $10 on some gear oil, rent the slide hammer, and a few hours.

Easy as hell to change if you have a good slide hammer set.

Ahh rear bearings doh I thought for some reason front??? You have to take the axles out. To do that you have to remove diff cover. Drop the center pin & get the C clips of the axles & then remove them. Then you can pull the seal & bearing.

i just did this and i didnt take pics to do a write up sorry. But on my moser all i did was jack up the car drain the diff fluid, removed wheel, caliper, rotor, then removed the axle. make sure you have all the parts before you do all this. the bearing from napa was like $35 and the seal is about $4. it takes a couple of hours. any machine shop with a 12ton press should be able to do it in an hour or 2 depending on how busy they are good luck.......... it may seem like a bitch but once you get involved in it its very interesting just get a buddy to help you out

It does depend upon if you have a stock 7.5 rear or a 12 bolt, 9" or 8.8 as to how to service the wheel bearings. I was describing the 7.5. 6']['9 is describing the 12 bolt/9'inch set-ups.
