Frayed belt edge
I have an ASP underdrive pulley and asp overdrive alternator pulley. I'm using the gatorback belt specified for this set up and I've noticed the belt's edge is becoming frayed in spots. Would overtightening the bolts on the pulleys cause this? Theres less then 1,000 miles on the belt. Any insight would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Thanks!

Could this be an early sign that your pulley is coming off the crank? I wouldn't think you could overtighten the pulley bolt so much so that it caused the belts to be misaligned (at least not before the bolt broke)...but I do think if the pulley was coming loose the belts would show it first. Just my 2 cents, good luck.

make sure the edges of the pulleys are not ragged. that could cause the fray. also, if the pulley is ribbed, makes sure the belt is centered on the ribs on all of the pulleys, if its off on one, it will eventually get un-centered on the others as well.

Well I am gettin sick of the lower amount of assist from the power steering at lower speeds which I believe is caused by the underdrive pulley. The ten horses that I might gain isn't worth the harder to drive at lower speeds effect. So hopefully puttin the old pulley back on will help driveability

I've never noticed any additional steering effort on my car ? Oh well whatever you want to do . If your belt is getting frayed it is generally caused by the tensioner arm on the tensioner pulley getting worn and no longer holding the pulley straight. If this is the case then the 1st pulley AFTER the tensioner pulley is the one that the belt will rub it's edge on. You'll be able to tell either by watching it while it's running or just looking at the pulley while it's stopped for signs of the belt running against its outer lip.
