Default 4.6, LS1, or 5.0?

I'm lookin at a 99 TA (black, 6spd, 39k miles, chrome, leather, etc.)----> http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...or=&cardist=25 should I get the TA or a newer 4.6 GT/Cobra or neither and put 6-7k into my stock 5.0? What are some good and bad things about those years of fbodies? How much would be a good price for it? btw if I get a newer car my dad will be buying my 5.0. My goal is a low-mid 12 sec. daily driver.

I posted this same question at stangnet, and here is what they are saying http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=500785

OPINIONS???

Obviously asking a question like that on 'stang and LS1 forums are going to give you some biased answers. So to stick to the norm of the answers here, go with the TA. I love my LS1 and unless something serious happens I don't plan on getting rid of it.... EVER.

I vote for the LS1 or the 5.0. I would NOT get the 4.6. The newer ones cost as much as an LS1 and the older/cheaper 4.6's have no ***** whatsoever. The 5.0 would be cheap and you could mod it pretty good with the money you save over the LS1. Then again......you can get a good LS1 for $10-$12k nowadays...........

Good advice.

5.0's are easy to mod. No question about that. Unless you swap the motor, you're stuck with an old school 'stang to drive.

I say stick with the 5.0 or go with an LS1. If the 1/4 is your primary concern, then I'd stick with your 5.0 and mod the hell out of it. You probably know how many fast 5.0's are out there. They are very cheap to make fast and easier to work on in my opinion. Like was said above, the only disadvantage is you will be driving a much older car if you stick with the 5.0.

haha 03 Cobra...I wish A couple good things about the TA is 4 wheel disk, better paint, air conditioning, factory 340hp(flywheel), stronger trans., cd player, and lower miles 39k

The 5.0 has a stronger rear, I planned on the trickflow h/c/i kit, bolt ons, and 3.73 gear... $3500k for everything which would give me 350hp. So the hp would be equal with $8500(includes price I could sell the car for) invested BUT I would still need a paint job($850-I know somebody), and I would still have my WEAK t5, also need my AC fixed $250. So the 5.0 would cost me about 10,000 total, to equal the performance of a slightly modded LS1 and the TA cost 12,000--so 2k more for the TA

I'm not really looking for a drag car but something that looks nice that want give me too many headaches(breaking), it will be a daily driver to school (60 miles round trip)

not worth getting the 4.6 unless its a 03 cobra and you already said thats out.

keep the 5.0; bore/stroke it, slap an AFR/FTI combo, a t56, gears, and and strengthen the 8.8" or swap in another rear and you'll be hauling some ***.

hell my buddy with a stroke 5.0 (327), 8.5 low compression motor (for a future s-trim), AFR 185's/FTI cam, shorties, yada yada yada put down 330rwhp/360rwtq. yes that doesnt seem like a lot in terms of thinking about the ls1 but with higher compression and an n/a setup you'll be alot faster then an ls1 with minor bolt ons.

I think you answered it yourself. You could buy the Mustang, but it's an old car that will need more "stupid" repairs. You'll also have to mod it quite a bit to get it to BOLT ON LS1 performance. You buy a LS1, throw less than a grand into it and run 12's - get 30mph on the highway - and still have PLENTY of room for improvment. If you have a built 5.0, it'll be at it's limits in short order until a stroker or f/i is involved - whereas you'll just be getting started with the LS1.

That's how I looked at it when I had GT. Sure, I could make it "quick", but it wouldn't be "fast.

I just raced my buddy with a 91 GT last night. 3.73's, full exhaust, cold air, pulleys, 100 shot vs a lid and catback LS1. I pulled right off the get go and he wasn't catching up. A stock auto LS1 would have given him a good run for his money too. You can read about it here... https://ls1tech.com/forums/street-racing-kill-stories/214169-come-one-come-all-00-ss-vs-n-100-shot-5-0-a.html

my stock LS1 ran in the low 13's, my buddy got a 12.9 STOCK, I have owned many cars in my life, and I would say that this car is the cream of the crop......only draw back is the price of bolt ons......way high HOWEVER....I suspect there will be a huge mustang surge in the next few years, with the 05 comming out soon, and the after market companies will try to keep up, and the LS1 stuff will get cheaper and cheaper, so by the time a vehicle is paid off (3 or 4 years) you'll be able to mod away and untill then, it's still gonna be fast !!! it's win win

with his mods he be hard pressed to hit 300rwhp. if he adds some AFR/FTI combo, runs more compression, adds some more bolt ons the race would be very different. plus the fox bodies are a good 200lbs easy lighter then an fbody.

Keep this in mind...this was a mustang owners sig on another site, hopefully this will shed some light on things.
A Mustang cannot beat an LS1. Simply cannot happen. Please refer to this guide if you're a Mustang owner that thinks you may have beaten an LS1.

#1 The LS1 cannot be beaten.
#2 All Mustangs are stock.
#3 All LS1s run mid/high 12s bone stock from the factory.
#4 Even the 03 Cobra is a mid 13 car.
#5 The LS1 was not racing.
#6 The LS1 was parked.
#7 The LS1 was just playing with you.
#8 The LS1 was actually a V-6 with Z28 badges.
#9 The LS1 was actually an LT1, which can only be beaten by an LS1.
#10 The race does not count because it ended before 160mph.
#11 The race does not count because it did not start from a roll.
#12 The race does not count because the LS1's passenger was performing oral on the driver.
#13 The race does not count because the LS1 was not properly tuned.
#14 If you still feel your Mustang may have beaten an LS1, please see #1.

A wise man once said "There's no replacement for displacement"

5.7 > 5.0 > 4.6

After further deliberation, my vote is LS1. Period. The 5.0 would be that much older and take that much more work to get anywhere near the LS1. The 4.6 would take a LOT more work if older, or a little bit more work if newer at which point you are spending as much as an LS1 would be but are getting slightly less. Only real stang to be considered is the 03/04 Cobra but they are still too expensive. I would, however, advise against and 02 SS. It would be too expensive. Get an older LS1. Do NOT spend more than $15k max.

The point is all that work is needed. It's just the difference talking about an engine that has 10 years in engineering difference.

FWIW, he dyno'd almost 300rwhp and 450rwtq...
