Default Just wondering...tires breaking loose at higher rpms...

I have been noticing since I did all my mods and tuning that I have a sort of unusual wheelspin problem. I normally do a light takeoff and then hit the gas, and I can usually do it without spinning, but at about 4500 rpms, or maybe a little higher in first, my tires start to spin. I am running stock size tires (mostly so I don't destroy my rear) and all...but I just thought that was a little weird. Is it normal on stock tires?

The tires spinning at a low rpm is a sign overpowering them, the same is true of high rpm spins. At the point where they begin to spin the power is coming on harder than the tires can find traction. I've experienced it in a couple M6 cars before.

Isn't he experiencing the wheelspin right around the average RPM for peak torque?

Yeah he is...i think it's a combination of the peak TQ and the horsepower coming on real hard at that point.

Looks like you'll have to be Johnny Featherfoot for awhile until you get some traction. Dont feel bad though, I'm going to have to be featherfooting this spring too.

I suppose I could always try and tweak my traction control and/or timing and just run with traction control enabled....ewww...traction control...

Time for some nitto's. Since we have 98's with the auburn rear diff, we can put just a "tad" more power down w/o it failing.

Maybe I will get a pair of race tires/wheels for the rear. I just put on a set of Hankooks. The price was right, and they stick really well compared to that stock junk. And driving in the rain is completely different, I have way more wet traction.

Yes it is even with 98z28's with the A4. I know I read this a hundred times from the members but I have to agree that if you put some nittos on that animal it WILL stick that bitch to the asphalt. I had to look all over the place for someone who stocked them and was only able to find one size in my area. But without Nittos the car stayed parked and with them It takes care of any sideways bull.

Man...I wonder how long it will take to burn this set of tires off...they are a softer compound...(keep in mind I got 37k out of the stock tires, but they probably would not have passed inspection this month, with all the dry-rot and all).

My stock F1's were done by 16k when they reached the wear marker. They lasted untill 19k when I developed a leak doing a burnout, they were beginning to dry out I think.

Same here. I take off in first, pressing on the gas pedal slowly until I'm well under way. Tires are grabbing. Then when I hit around 4000-4500 rpms, I can hear the tires slip a little. But I can only do this when it's cold; all I have a lid + catback.

My car is pretty much stock and I have had that happen if I mat the gas in second to go around a turning car or something.

I had better be doing at least 60 or when i stomp it the tires still spin... thanks to the 4.11 gears... I have to have the M/T DR's .... they hook hard from a launch on stock rims!

Thumbs down

Yes but were talking lids and catbacks on a 98 with 2.73's. If you stomp it it will put you sidesways at 60. And when purchased the car thoses Goodyear Sparrows would roast on command 1st thru 3rd and were talking A4 w/w 2.73. Maybe I better just keep this car instead of trying to find a 35th ann. model. Y'all got some serious performance problems and just don't know it.

being able to cut it sideways is not a problem... its an achievement
make it as fast as you can and build the suspension and chassis and get some DRs... with my mods and my DR's i have no problem making it hook...
im going to the track saturday ill post some 1/8 times and a 60ft in my 02 Z and in my 69 SS with the 502 and NO2

Mine is the same. 01 A4 2.73's.. Rumbler cat back, Lid, FRA.

On my dunlop Snow tires 225/55's on stock firebird rims outside temps below freezing the car hooks initially.. then around 3500rpm or so it starts to spin them hard. my summer tires, goodyear Eagle F1's on stock snowflakes, during the same cold weather just roast them from a standstill to any speed below 55mph. lol.. I got the car when it was cold out so I dunno how the F1's will be in the warm weather but I'm guessing they will not spin.

I think its normal for the tires to break loose at or near the torque peak.
