Default Another "name that sound" thread..

This is one is really wierd and Ill be suprised is anyone can figure it out.

When im driving and I press the gas pedal down hard at around 1700-1900 rpms, I get a nasty clicking sound.. for example if cruising at 50 mph and I put it in 5th and floor it, it will make the sound.
It sounds like if you tapped an ink pen on the desk really fast. The sound is only happens for about .5 seconds and only in that specific RPM range.

It also only does it when the car is in gear.. if I put it in neutral and rev to that RPM range, it doesnt make the sound.. so I dont think it's the sound is coming from the engine. I'm hoping maybe something rattling due to resonance at that specific RPM range.

Another thing is I think my passenger AIR Check Valve is going bad as I keep getting a SES for P1416. I have one on order.. Could a bad valve make such a noise?

Any other ideas before I take it to the dealer and get raped?

Could it be pinging that you are hearing?

When I try to take off in 2nd at about 5mph and the revs drop low like 1000-1200ish with heavy throttle I get that exact same sound. You say it happens in 5th at 50, does it happens anytime else? Maybe you just need to do what I do: downshift.

Hope this helps.

I hear that the AIR check valve will make a sound like that, ticking really fast, kinda like an exaust leak sound. After you replace it and if it still does it, I have no clue what it owuld be.

My guess would be:

You running on low octane gas.
When the engine is under load this is what you hear...a pinging noise.
Try down shift, it won't cure the promlem but put less load on your engine.

The cure:
Higher octane gas a min of 92 octane specially during the summer. During the "colder" months in Cali you can get away with lower octane gas but not recommended.
I saw you are in Cali, high summer heat = more pinging.
Your car might be a preown car and a previous owner possibly had a tune for some higher octane (like 100 octane) race gas. Now you running on regular pump gas so it's pinging.
Get a proper tune ( LS1 Edit, Hp Tuners, Predator custom tune etc.) or get the PCM refreshed by the dealer.
Your air fuel, timing should be way out.
You can also try a 160 Tstat and colder spark plugs. They will help.

PHP Code:
if I put it in neutral and rev to that RPM rangeit doesnt make the sound..
couse your engine in not under load

Hope this helps.

Hmmm.. thanks for the help guys.

Didnt consider pinging as I never really knew what It sounded like before. The car's been dyno-tuned with Cali 91 Octane using ls1edit. I always use 91, but I usually get it from cheaper stations..

Ill fill up with some Chevron 91 and replace the check valve that's giving me the P1416 code and hopefully one of those is the problem.

Yeah, sounds like ping to me. Its not good to give it much gas at low rpms in higher gears.....it puts a lot of stress on the bottom end.

When I suggested downshifting I said that cause I know my cars not pinging. I use good gas and it only happens at real low rpms like around/below 1000-1200. The sound that I hear comes from my trans. Anyone got any ideas what it is? It doesnt feel like anythings wrong after the rpms get up.

do you have an aftermarket fuel pump?....i know this might be a really dumb question to ask but in my 1981 T-1000(has a sbc 355)you'll hear the fuel pump sometimes...but its mostly when you start the car...other wise you cant hear it...but on occasion you will

Hmm.. check valve wasnt the problem.
Went through a tank and a half of chevron.. still making the sound.

I was using Installuniversity.com's install guide to change my spark plugs today and they mentioned in it that if the gasket that goes between the AIR pipe and the exhaust manifold needs to be replaced it will make a ticking noise when the engine is under load...could that be a possibility for you?

Hmm .. nah, I replaced the whole air pipe, gasket, and check valve which seemd to have fixed the P1416 SES thankfully..
