That would be the block size.

is it that a small block v8 has a smaller displacement? would a 408 be a big block? 427...? is the displacement the same, but is milled from a larger block of steel/aluminum? what constitutes a big block?

im not sure what the 408 is but the 427 is a big block i do believe. the small block is an actually smaller block of iron or alluminum than the big block. the big block can have larger displacment due to the fact there ir more volume to take cylinders out of

physical size, weight, and bore spacing.

a 408, 427, 434, 454, 471, 500 based on an genIII/IV block would be a small block.

Well you can make a 427 from a small block...

I too have always wondered what exactly makes the two different (small block and big block that is). It's obvious that a big block is made from a larger block of aluminum or iron or whatever than the small block. But if one small block is made from a larger mass of metal than another small block, then why isn't the first of the two considered a big block in comparrison to the latter?

Small blocks I've heard can rev a little higher and faster, make more hp, big blocks make more torque and sound cooler, it's basically stroke size I guess but with a small block I guess the strokes are generally smaller. That's what I've heard at least.

^^ thats like saying all honda motors are high end 9k rpm revving monsters.

a big block is just that, made from a larger block, the specifications and requirements i am not sure of though.

a small block is a small block but can be bored out to a 383, 408, 427 but is still the same block and block size.

It depends on the distance between adjacent cylinders. I forgot what the exact number was but it actually has nothing to do with the displacement. However, since there is so much space between cylinders, they are always bore to a nice size. It turns out that even though a Viper is 8 liters, it is considered a small block since the spacing from the center of one cylinder to the next is not above the minimum value.

A Viper is 10 cylinders, i'm guessing you knew that, hopefully just a typo.
