Default I'm new to chevy!

Hey all! I'm new here to LS1tech and new to Chevy in general. Here's a little about me and what I am interested in. I'm a Ford guy, got a 96 Cobra with a bored and built block, cammed out with full bolt ons, lowered, suspension work etc etc... the list could go for a while, and well I want to broaden my knowledge of american muscle hence why I am now here and as you can say "crossed over to the other side". But hey, at least you guys don't drive Civics . But anyways I have an opportunity to buy a slightly used 03 Corvette ls1 shortblock and before I purchase it, and take on another garage build up quest, I thought it would be best to find out what the heck I would be getting myself into. For starters I would like to know the basic differences in the LS engines. Thanks guys, hope to have some learn a thing or 2 from you Chevy guys!

welcome. first thing to know is that these motors are way under rated. my z28 was rated at 315 at the crank, but when i dynoed it last weekend (with only intake and catback) i had 309 to the wheels. witha 20% loss in the driveline, thats 370 crank hp.

the LS1 is a 5.7L 348. it was available in 97-04 in the corvette, 98-02 in f-body, and 04 in GTO.

the LS6 is an LS1 with a modified block, cam, heads and intake manifold. it came in the z06 only.

The LS2 is based on the LS6, but is 6.0L, and adds drive-by-wire. This came in the 05+ covette and 05-06 GTO (and trailblazer ss, SSR...)

The LS7 is a 7.0L motor, based on the LS platform, but produced 500hp. This comes only in the 06+ z06.

I could be slightly off, but thats the basic idea of the motors. the vette is a great car, but an 01-02 LS1 f-body has the same hp, but can be had for about $10k less.

Does this mean I can call you Ford Guy Gone Bad? LOL -- Buy any of them, haven't seen a f-body engine I haven't liked yet. Welcome to the boards, and to the other side.

guys, i think he is buying a vette SHORTBLOCK, not the actuall vette. either way though. you'll be alot happier. also to add something to the discussion, how easy are these to work on?

Lol ya, I am just talking about the shortblock. I have plans for it, if I have enough money perhaps built up a second v8 monster, or just sell it and make a few $$$. As you said, how easy are these to work on? That was something I was planning on asking

well the good thing is that the LS1 has sooo much aftermarket its rediculus. its the most versatile engine ive seen, with lots of potential.

if its not in the car then its real easy to work on. in the f-body 1/2 the engine is hidden, so its harder to work on, but outside of the car its pretty chill.
