aight, this dude at my temporary work station says he's got a charger (i *believe* he said it was a '79..but i honestly dont remember), an he's sayin that when he got it, as a rustbucket, he cleaned it up a lil bit, got it down to ~3,000lbs, and ran it at the track when it was stock and claimed a 10.xx sec pass. holy **** batman...that car culdnt've gone that quick - even if it weighed about 3k. i dont know much about classics, or not even a whole lot about newer cars...or....about cars in general, but, for cryin out loud - a 10 sec n/a pass on a classic thats essentially bone-stock other than weight modification???!! an then he says that he's done alot of mods to it since then, to include some $9,000 tranny (apparently its a "racing" tranny with every upgrade possible, according to him).
then he goes on to tell me he's got a 98 z28 with the "lt1" motor in it with about 350,000mi. so yea, that right there set me off. after i told him that i have an 02 z28, and that 98-02 have ls1's, and culdnt really describe to me the lights or body style of the car, i proceeded to tell him that he's got a 97 at best. his response - "ok."
holy ****, how hard is it to admit that someone else has a nice car, an that u dont have to lie to make urself look better?? if u dont know much about cars, then dont say much about them - pretty simple concept. i really dont believe this guy's got a 10 second charger "stock" ...but i just wanted to make sure on this board before i run my own mouth.

Well, before I start to rag on this guy, you might want to make sure he isnt talking about 1/8 mile, cause that might be possible. There are some 1/8 mile only tracks here and there. Ive had people mistake those times for 1/4 mile times before.
With that said, we'll assume hes talking about the 1/4.
I dont care if moses himself told me he ran that id tell him hes full of ****. There aint no way in hell he ran a 10 sec pass in a stock car. In '79, right in the middle of the smog era, even the vettes were doing good to get in the 13's. Most cars were lucky to be in the high 14's. Even today I cant think of any car that will run in the 10's stock.
You'll find lots of people that think they have to lie about having a fast car. Why, I still havent found that out. I can only guess they arent really happy with their cars. I know my car is fairly fast stock, but im not going to go around saying its faster than it is.

alot of ppl around here do that, since our local strip is only an 1/8th....and then we get ppl thinking there hondas are fast when they get 11's..but of-coarse....#1 its a honda, and #2 it is just an 1\8...and seing as he told you that his 98 had an lt1, right there i would have said, "you dont know ****, and im not talking to you anymore"....haha just imo

lol holy **** at the friggin hostility sorry bout the confusion - my 2 questions were along the lines of - does a *stock* "classic" charger, minus a few lbs, run a 10.xx 1/4; 2nd question - 350k miles on an lt1? seems a bit steep, but..is that even possible? ive heard of upwards to maybe 250k, but i figured thats with God's blessing?
as far as maybe gettin the 1/4 mixed up with the 1/8th - ill ask him. didnt even think about that, and if he got the lt1 mixed up with the ls1, then i wuldnt be surprised if he got the track lengths mixed up.
3rd question i was thinkin about - can u really spend $9k on a transmission??
sorry bout the initial confusion - i even reread my original to make sure everything was right, an now that i read it again, i kick myself in the left butt cheek. but, thats wut i get for tryin to post in a rush right before work sigh.
thanks for the replies!

when it comes to classics I have heard that a 1969 Nova with a 375HP 396 4-speed car with a set of slicks could run high 10's off the show room floor. I heard that on some program on Speed channel

Also remember a 4 speed car will have 4th as 1:1 so on a rear end like 3.90 or 4.10's the top speed will be limited even more so when many of these old motors don't rev that high. 125mph+ traps are not going to happen, so 10's are even less likely.
