Default New here, looking for a LS1

Looking into getting maybe a Firechicken what years between 98-02 were the best years? Or should I say which years should I steer away from cause of problems?
Im either aiming at getting a transam or a 97-99 vette havent decided yet.

But I need your guys help so I can make my decision.

Right now I have a 03 silverado lifted hence the name, and Im going to keep it so the LS1 would be my DD

98 and 99 models come with shitty head gaskets and the regular LS1 intake manifold. the 2000 up models have the LS6 manifold's and slightly better head gaskets. thats all i know

all years are fine.if you get a pre01 car 97-00 upgrade the oil pump they are weak.
98=return style fuel system,auburn diff,28lb injectors
97-00better cam .498 lift
01-02=ls6 intake better heads better oil pump no egr
of course the 01 02 is gonna cost more but if i had it to do over id find an 01 or 02.dont worry about mileage either these engines were designed to be 300k motors.the 98s have weak rod bolts as well

So I should defintely shoot for 00-02 then?

What about the vettes between 97-00?

Also how much sould I expect to pay for a transam 00-02 Coupe or T-Top?

I know what the bluebook says but the cars on autotrader are going for more than that?

id think around 15k give or take a little the pre01 cars sell alot cheaper try 7k give or take a little.if you can find an older one cheaper go for it.as for vettes the engine is the same.the hp is rated lower on the f body but both cars have 350hp.

Well if pre01s are that much cheaper then maybe I should go for a 99 and just build it up?

yeah nothing really wrong with any of the years, my 99 has been solid! the only downside I have consistantly heard is that the 98s are harder to tune due to pcm, otherwise an LS1 is an LS1. Find the car with the tranny/features and condition you want, as for vettes, pretty much the same story....all good! happy hunting...

So basically Im just looking for one for a cool price then?

As for checking out the car should I just run a carfax and be good, or should I run the carfax PLUS other things?

Unless you need a back seat, or are going to be strictly drag racing I would suggest looking into a vette. All around better cars, really.
If you do get an fbody, look out for dead power window motors, leaky t-tops, and on the firebird models broken headlight motors.

So would you take a 98 vette over a 01-02 F-Body?

well, you'll proabably ending up paying about 5k more for that year of vetter compared to the 01-02 f-body, if your sold on the looks of the vette and the handling go for it....or... buy the 01 f-body and put 5 grand into it and smoke vettes just my .02

Me personally, I would save up a little and more and try and get a '01 or '02 Z06. Around here they can be had with low miles for just under $30,000. But thats just me, I rather auto-x or tool around on a backroad than dragrace.

Do you need it for work or weather conditions? If not and its just a fun truck for the weekends then id say yes and pick up the c6 as it is an amazing machine. Another option would be to get a c5 z06 as both the c5 z06 and the c6 put out around the same power to the wheels, c6 has the ls2 though. Its all in what you want the car for. If your going to heavily mod it then id say keep the truck around as **** breaks and you dont want to be without any transportation.

Id be happy with 400rwhp out of whatever vette I get.....Having a lifted truck defintely has had its advantages. You get way more respect on the road, people think twice before pulling out infront of you or cutting you off.
Oh and btw the truck is paid off
