Default lid question

this may be a totally newb question but i was totally into 4 cylinder "power" untill 2 years ago when i bought my transam, so i was still in ricer mode when i did this but still kinda makes me think it may have been a good idea? Jw what everyone else thought. I took my stock lid off and scored the fins with a exacto knife then snapped them all off making the lid smooth. then i cut the silecer things or whatever they are off and used jb weld to fill in the gaps and smooth out the air flow some. I wanted to do something with the bellows to but ran out of "free" ideas. Does this sound logical or am i still tricking myself into thinking i dont need to spend the money on an aftermarket lid when mine pretty much looks the same?

ditto, except the port. Porting will require a tune because you'll lean out the motor too much without it knowing you have more air.

A lot of people do what you are talking about, cutting the fins and such. But just go ahead and buy a new, real lid.

Buying a lid is probably the best cheap beginner mod anyone can do on these cars. Your guranteed a 5-10whp difference, it some cases more. And i agree port your own throttle body, or get a ported one from the sponsors(new era, thunder racing, etc). And you will be fine with a stock tune with a ported TB, it will not lean the car out.

That's more what I was meaning to say. I went back and did some research. Porting the throttle body is great, should net 7-9 horse. However, do not port the MAF. The stock MAF can handle up to 500 horse unmodified. Leave it alone.

Try searching on MAF or Mass Air Flow. Lots of posts regarding. Also, I searched on Porting Throttle Body and got lots of good info. I'm porting mine now!!

Good luck.

^^ X2 just leave the stock MAF alone. Will definately lean you out. Not worth strewing up your car over possibly a few hp.

All I can say is search is your friend. Everything you can ever think of doing to your car has been discussed, usually at length.

As for fixing your MAF, you can usually find someone selling their stock stuff. Try local boneyard or E-bay. Don't need to spend a lot.
