I've just generally noticed it always around 1000. I actually think mines a little below that. As long its not more than 200rpm off, I really don't worry about it in general. Talk to some people that REALLY watch their cars, and they will tell you different, but for the general range, thats about right to me. My .02

My tach READS about 500 rpm idle once warmed up and in gear. I wouldn't necessarily believe this, but at the same time, my alternator will drop charging. Just putting it in neutral raises the idle maybe ~50-100 rpm's and the alternator will kick back on. Anyone else experience this?

The factory preset idle speeds for ALL LS1 F-bodies '98-'02:
550rpm in gear, 650rpm in park/neutral (A4)
800rpm (M6)
Idle will be higher at cold temps and on a cold start, but those are the numbers for a warm motor.
The only way you have a different idle speed is if you have custom tuning, or something is wrong with the car causing it to idle too low or high.
Don't pay too much attention to your factory tach. Mine shows an in gear idle of about 700rpm, but my scanner always shows 550 (+/- 25rpm).
