Default How High on the Tac should I shift without hurting anything?

Just bought an 00 TA WS6 M6. I am new to the manual scene and was wondering what is the highest rpm i should be safe shifting at? I know there is a short orange area, before the red begins. Can i shift at the beginning of the orange or am i safe to shift at the beginning of the red or mid way through the red? Any advice?

Honestly, I have heard a few M6 guys say that around 6,200 is their sweet spot, but it all depends on your exact setup. You dont have to shift at the orange, but I wouldnt bother bringing it very deep into the 6,000s unless you have mods that put your power up that high.

I've always shifted just a hair before 6000 (on the original tach, which is off by about 200 RPMs from what I've read)... 192k miles on it now... never modded the engine internals... been beating the hell outta it since 40k... and it hasn't flinched yet.

I have been shifting around mid 5's and I am getting a good bark in second, but nothing in third, so hopefully i can change my shifting point so i can rip em through second and chirp them in 3rd.

The rev limiter is set at 5800-6000 stock. Try to get as close to that as possible w/o hitting it. Modded the limiter can be raised, then it's dependant on the peak of the cams power range.
I have always shifted at about 6K on the tac, only because just beyond that the limiter kicks in.

Each gear is different. First is not as critical. But if you baby it as you go up in gears the rpm you start at in the next gear will be too low in the torque curve. So shift early in 1st 5700 or so. But take it to the red after. The stock Fbody LS1 limiter is 6200. The same engine in the Ybody was limited to 6400. Why? Only GM knows for sure. But 6199 is occasionally safe. Torque is for acceleration and horsepower is for top speed.

I got my light set for shifting at 6800, it would be pointless that high on a stock engine though... I don't remember for sure but I thought the stock LS1s started dropping off after 5500, you could probably be shifting at 5700-5800 and be good in the power band the whole time. I don't think you would be getting much more power after that.

If you're speedshifting while racing, shift 2-400 rpm above peak hp. It actually helps on street tires because you don't get too far back down in the torque curve.

id shift it at 6k that should keep you in the powerband....the stock rev limiter is set at 6200.....i love my auto i just program it to shift at a certain rpm and put it in D...no worries of needing a shift light or watching the tach.....

I shift about 6000. My tach is a tad slow so if I try to run to 6200 I hit the limiter. So when I hit 6G's I shift.

Once you have owned your car long enough you will hit the limiter a few times and your ear will know when you are about to hit it. So naturally you will learn to shift right before you hit it. It's all in the ear and feel. You will not hurt anything if you go into the red. However, do not rev above 4k while in neutral or with the clutch in (without a load on the engine) this is bad. Also, try not to go into the red while downshifting! Asides from that your fine!

I still bounce of the limiter with my car haha. I've owned it for almost 9 months.. The car is telling me "I got more" but the pcm says no bitch.

Just shift right before the red line.. I hear the push rods are rather weak, I also wouldn't test the stock valve springs.

The 4.10's woke it up pretty good too.

i got a 98 ss only mods are slp lid and k&n. i get some wheel spin in 2nd shifting at 4800 revs and a decient chirp going into 3rd. think cuz the tach is sluggish... needless to say i shift by ear. banging gears is like being with a girl, she let you no when she wants more, and when your in too deep

The stock tach isn't trustworthy, and is a guess at best, and that changes for every gear. The lower the gear, the quicker you rev, the slower the tach is.

Get a shift light and set it around 6k. By the time you react, it will be between 6-6199 if your quick enough, which won't hit the limiter. BTW, ALL LS1 cars have the limiter set to 6200 stock.
