why not have pin-on ram air hoods?

the 98+ ram air hoods are non-functional and for looks anyways.

Upsides.. Pin on hoods save a good deal more weight over bolt on hoods. They are light enough to make hood removal a 1 man job and when you take it off there is tons of space to work. Also generally pin on hoods are cheaper to buy as well.

downsides... having to fab up mounts for them (and the risk of misdrilling a hole in the hood! Where to put hood when you take it off. its more time consuming to get the hood off and ummm.. I think thats it.

It is easier to get the hood off, lighter if you remove the latch components, gives you peace of mind durring your 10s run that your 5 lb hood isn't going to flip into your face w/o an act of god, lets the cool kids on the street know that you mean business... etc...

While this is probably the most true out of the reasons suggested so far, the others are correct also.

You better take a closer look under the hood.

I sense another "What is the One True definition of ram air?" thread coming on.

Maybe to curb that bullshit, I can ask a question...

How much weight would a pin-on hood save over a bolt-on hood?

The air box is not sealed like on the LT1 cars.. it's not a true ram air, it's more like a cold air. I see you are another victim of GM marketing. For the non-sealed box to produce an effective ram air effect you'd have to be going in excess of 130mph.

The 98+ SS and WS6 hoods are not much more than looks. Sorry to bust your bubble. Ask about it in the Gen 3 external section, knowledgable people will tell you the same thing.

......and here it is!

We can all agree that the hoods are not completely "just for looks" as they do allow air directly to the air box. Even with the air box completely sealed the air is still not travelling directly from the scoop(s) to the air box, it has to flow through the ducts in the hood (on the SS's anyway).

I believe I can quote it as " the 98+ ram air hoods are non functional anyway "

Knowledgeable, or just ******* picky? lol
