Will stock lifters work?
New to the LS1 sceene and have a question.
I am installing a trex cam/patriot gold spring package in my 98 z28 and was wondering, will the stock lifters be ok to use? Or, should I throw some more money at it and buy some aftermarket ones?
Thanks!
Dan

Im goin to be doin a cam install at the end of the month and I am stayin with my stock lifters. From the research I have doin it seems that what most people have done. Also keep in mind that if you want to replace the lifter the heads have to come off which is at least another 500 in labor to replace them. The cams that these cars use are roller cams but if it was an older style engine with a flat tappet design then yes lifters are a must.

Engine is already out and apart, so new gm lifters will be fine?
Oh yeah, I didn't pull the motor to do the cam swap, it is apart for painting and other various mods.
going with a high volume GM oil pump, ARP rod bolts,Fast 78mm intake, ported stock TB,LTH,ORY,3"Borla, 12 bolt Strange rear,Spool,3.73:1 G/R, 3400 Vigilante stahl, tubular k member, adjustable torque arm, adjustable LCA, wolfe anti roll bar.................. lots to do, so little time before the track opens, hoping for low 11's, what ya think? Can it do it?

Go with new lifters. They are only like a little over $100 from SDPC. They are LS7 lifters. That is what GM replaced the LS1 lifter with. Mine had about 60k miles on them when I did my heads/cam swap and I replaced them for peace of mind. If they only had like 20k miles on them maybe I'd trust them but it's better to spend the $100 and be safe than to chance such a cheap part and have a more costly failure in the future because you were cutting corners. Plus that Trex is going to need to spin up pretty high to be effective, this is where your stock LS1 10 year old lifter will fail. The LS7's can spin the RPM and still be happy. It's your dime. But this is just my philosophy...

If the heads weren't coming off and the engine was in the car, I'd say you can keep them.
It's already out and everything is easily accessible now.
Do these things while it is out.
New poly motor mounts.
ARP Rod Bolts
LS7 Lifters
Heck even go to the LS6 Valley cover for better PCV ventilation.
Updated Knock sensors (the older 98's were a tad sensitive making them prone to false knock once some modding had been done.)
2 Piece Timing cover (just in case you want a bigger cam, will save a lot of headache)
LS6 ported oil pump or better.
