Default Push Starting LS1 Safe?

Is it safe for an LS1 to be exessively push started? By push start, I mean having the car rolling and then engaging the clutch.

I was advised to do this as much as possible to avoid unnecessary use of the starter motor, but I just want to make sure this won't cause any unusual strain for a 4th generation TA.

Why wouldn't you want to start it the way it is designed to? My other car had 165k on it and never had a starter issue, they are cheap anyway. As far as strain on a push start, its shock to the drivetrain so it would be worse than just using the starter.

I wouldn't do it a lot. I've only done it once when I had to. I'm not sure what exactly can go wrong, but it's definitely not worth it for the life of the starter. do you mean you start your car all the time like that?

Ya that is kinda strange is the starter going bad? its always better to use the key and if it was bad for the starter to use the key then there would be a lot of broke down a4 cars. Also bump starting should only be done when needed.

^^ agreed. its more wear on your clutch most of all. i would rather spend $100 on a starter than $350 on a clutch.

i wouldnt listen to anything from whoever told you that.

So far, I've only done this when I had a declining ground, which was a couple times.

Come to think of it, I guess it really isn't worth risking anything for the starter.

Thanks for the advice.

That's a very good point.

I'll bring that up to my advisor. Ironic thing is he was the same one who was telling the importance of not riding the clutch; how each time you do it, you lose some surface.

Sorry, Mr. Starter. I love the clutch more.

I have done it a BUNCH on one of the previous cars i owned, but not becuase of choice but because my starter was a piece. Im with these guys, push starting your car does not justify wear on the starter or the price of a new one if you ever have to buy one.

who the hell told you to do that??? honestly thats the worst advice ever, think about the drivtrain probs later on.... labor alone to drop/clutch the t56/4l60 would be 10x the cost of starter...

im glad you asked us befor trying this...

No problem with the drivetrain (of course if you're not doing 100mph with motor off and then step of the clutch ), it's just stupid to do that when you can use starter.

honestly this is the dumbest thing ive ever heard. why the hell wouldnt you just start the car????? im pretty sure your starter is there to start your car, actually now that i think about it, its just a big weight. i bet if you take it off you can gain .5 on the 1/4 mile. i mean honestly, was this a real question?

Does the consensus of straining the drivetrain come from the fact that friction is reversed quickly first from the clutch to flywheel and then flywheel back to clutch and drivetrain?

Well, I'm definitely glad I asked about it first. It was actually my father who recommended this. He said he used to do this all the time with his manuals, such as the V6 Maverik, which was the last manual he owned. Myself, I'm accustomed to automatics for the most part, and of course, you can't do this with auto even if you wanted to. I specifically asked him if push-starting causes any extra strain/wear on the engine or drivetrain, and he confidently said 'no.'

This would be THE best reason to use the starter.
