Talking ~Just Became A LS1 owner!! Help?- pics

I just bought a 1998 Pontiac Trans Am! Black, T-tops, Leather, Power everything, and 137,000 miles. It does need a new paint job and a little work here and there(nothing that effects driveability.... just cosmetic)

I paid $2900 for it.... and it runs like a top. Good deal right?

Now for what needs the work!

Both windows don't go up or down? The driver side might nudge just a tiny bit up or down.... The headlights pop up fine and everything... but only one of the lights actually works and the other don't look blown or anything and neither of the blinkers work. The SES light is on.... but everything looks and sounds good and it runs great.

Now for the outside.... The paint is flaking off the front end, there is a little crack in the fender and some paint scratches. The guy opened his door and backed into something... so the edge of the doors fiberglass is a little messed up.

The interior was filthy when I got it... Luckily my job is detailing cars and it looks very nice compared to what it was now!

I need a little insight as to what I should do about some of its minor problems.

Any suggestions or comments? I will try and get pics up soon!

~Nathan

Get new window motors, check all of the wiring because it sounds like a lot of the wiring is shot or loose. Auto Zone can check the SES light and tell you what it is for free I think. And a new door would probably be easier than fixing the old one depending on how bad it is :-/

hell you only paid 2900 for that, doesnt sound to bad. hell ive seen v6's go for that price with similar miles. and as far as the lights you probably just need a new headlight and the bulbs are probably burned out as well ( you might need new sockets)

Any LS1 powered car in good mechanical condition is a steal at $2900. Toss another $3000 into that car, and it will shine (new paint job + new miscellaneous parts). At the end, you will have a very nice looking F-body for $5900.

yeah I would say he stretched the 0-60 a little there. Seems like a good deal you got. 100 bucks to fix both window motors, probably a messed up switch or fuse for the blinkers and the light is most likely a burnt bulb. Paint that thing sell it and make some money off of it.

sounds pretty healthy but i'd still take it to a good shop that works on these cars and have them look at it. it could be behind on maintenence and you wouldnt know it, causing premature wear to the engine and drivetrain.

the cosmetic stuff just takes time and money. overall, good deal on the car though for sure.

A lot of good deals are due to a car being in shitty condition, often just a lot of little problems, and nothing huge at all. That sounds to be the case here. Nice find. Take plenty of "before" pictures, and get started turning that thing into what it was born to be. We'll look forward to the "After's".

Heres the story on it from what he told me..... His dad bought it off the lot in 1998. He drove it around till about 60k miles and gave it to his son(guy I bought it from) when he was 16. He was kinda preppyish and didn't know much about cars! He pretty much just knew where to put gas in.

He didn't treat the car very good... lots and lots of stains and food and **** everywhere in the interior! He goes to college and works now and is buying a house.... so he didn't have time for it. He parked it and it sat for about a year.

His girlfriend wanted him to just get rid of it, so he KBB'd it and it said it was worth about $5000 and he figured he'd try and get $3500 for it b/c it had some flaws. I got him down to $2900

The vin number is 2G2FV22G7W2225545 can you tell me anything from this? free carfax or something?

The red wasn't my idea..... He spray painted the bumper black also.... because the peeling paint.

But all in all does it seem like $2900 was a good deal for this car?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Agreed. I bought a '99 Z28 in December because it was extremely clean inside and the body was laser straight. The car had Y2K's on it a lid and Hooker catback when I bought it. I put tires on it, did all the free mods, and added a few things here and there. Paid $5000 for it becasue I bought it in December in Indiana and no body wants a V8 rear drive car at that time of the year. I put just under $1,000 into it and sold it on Sunday for $8,000. There are deals to be had. If you can see past some of the rough spots you can turn this car into something really nice too. Good luck with the project!

Rent a steam cleaner from walmart, and scope the junk yards on car-part.com, and find a headlight, window motors, and front bumper. I would say you could get all for around 800-900 shipped.

The beauty of a black Fbody, is that there is a whole, whole lot of them. So body parts are easy to find. I wouldnt repaint, I would jsut replace for the same price, you can get the same result with half the time.

Good Luck, and Congrats...oh ya and WELCOME!
