I thought it was just something carried over from the 3rd gen. bodies and is useless on the 4th gens. I would love to cut it out and have someone weld some sheet metal in.

Like usasoc said, it's for the catalytic converter. Why ask a question if you're not even going to believe members responses? I guess you will still need others input since you probably won't believe me either.

ok thats fine its the cat, but beleive it or not, some people post things that they have no idea what theyre talking about. not calling him a liar but when i ask a question i would like a few responses saying the same thing so i know for sure. so next time if you want to be rude, just dont answer. thanks.

It's the cat in the third gen. The fourth gen cars its there because they were too lazy to remove it.

It was for the cats, until they started using the pups.

Yes it was cost effective to not change the sheet metal.

There are no real carryovers in the frame from the 3rd gen to the fourth gen.

It was for the catalyst until like 99 or 2000 for V8s and for 3.8 liter cars. LS1s switched to both right off the manifold and the bump just stayed for V6s

I've heard of people pounding it in with a sledgehammer since the cats were moved up after 98ish(?). Although I'm sure a new piece welded in would be smoother lol. I don't have cats, but you can tell where the cats used to be and the passenger side one is almost vertical.
