Default Just had my bottle filled.

I took it in for a fill up & the guy said they get the bottle real cold so it takes the full charge (10lb bottle). He said some places just do fill ups at ambiant temps so your not getting a full refill sometimes. I have no reason to doubt him, anyone else have info on this? There was no extra charge for this either.( $31.84 with tax for a fill up.)

Putting a bottle in the freezer helps make the filling process faster, not necessarily getting more in. Colder = Faster, warmer = longer.

Anyone ever try to trick you with "what's heavier, a pound of feathers or a pound of concrete".
10lb of mass of a molecule is 10lb
when things are warm, head pressure builds faster in the tank for the transfer pump to fight against is all.

Yeah if my bottle is empty it cost me $32.00 to have it filled. Every time I have had my bottle filled they freeze it, and I have had 3 different shops do the same thing. I just thought it was normal or had to be done that way.

concrete duh......seriously though if you freeze the bottle you can fill it without a nitrous pump(search freeze filling), you can also use a nitrous pump to fill a bottle that is room temperature. Your not getting more for your money either way.

If you are gravity filling the bottles it is a must to freeze the bottle in order to get a full fill. If you are using a pump station is doesn't matter if it's cold or hot you can get a full fill no matter what.

It all depends on the fill method.

It must be nice to find $3.00/lb N2O! Just filled a 10# bottle yesterday and it hit me for $47. In the scheme of things, it's still worth it! HAHA!

Yeah, it's highly recommended that the bottle be cool. Tried to have my bottle filled with a pump on a 95 degree day after the bottle had been sitting in the car for 6 hours, didnt go well.

Are shops charging you for a full 10 lbs on a partial fill?

I make 2 or 3 passes on a 10 lb bottle = 5 to 6 lbs. I pay for what goes back into my bottle to top it off. Bottle is frozen and the shop I use has a pump and scale.

The shop I worked at used a pump and we would just put the bottle in the freezer with the valve open. You have to sit there and rock it like a baby to get it filled sometimes. There are a few tricks to doing it faster. Scary ones are the sneaky petes and tiny bottles. Thing heats up like a grenade in your hand the second the bottle starts to build pressure.

Some shops have a less effecient way of weighing these "filled" bottles as well. I wish the shop I worked for (which will remain nameless) used a better method. We literally used a fish scale....its sad.
